SAN FRANCISCO - UCLA junior Griffin Canning has been named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season, announced the Pac-12 Conference office on Monday. It is the third time he has won the award in his career.
Canning, a right-handed pitcher from Coto de Caza, Calif., threw a complete-game shutout and struck out 10 batters in his final start of the regular season at Oregon. He scattered just four hits and two walks over his 9.0 innings of work. Canning tallied his sixth win during conference play and his second consecutive complete game.
It marked his third complete game shutout of the season and all three came on the road during Pac-12 play. Canning has totaled four complete games in 2017 and has eight in his career. He recorded his eighth double-digit strikeout of the year and his sixth in the last seven starts.
Canning has totaled 134 strikeouts in 2017, good for fifth in the NCAA and ranks seventh on UCLA's single-season strikeout list. He is also third in the country in starts and ninth in complete games.
UCLA returns to postseason play for the second time in three season this weekend as the No. 3 seed Bruins will face Texas in the opening game of the Long Beach Regional at 4 p.m. (PT) from Long Beach State's Blair Field. The game will be televised live on ESPN2. All ticket information for the Long Beach Regional can be found at longbeachstate.com/baseballregionals.
