Canning Leads UCLA over USC, 2-0

LOS ANGELES โ Griffin Canning threw a complete game shutout with 10 strikeouts, while Chase Strumpf hit a two-run home run as the UCLA baseball team won the series opener at USC, 2-0, on Thursday night from Dedeaux Field.
Canning threw his second complete game shutout of the season, the first since April 13 at Stanford, and the sixth complete game of his career. He recorded 10 strikeouts with just one walk over his 9.0 innings pitched.
UCLA scored the game's only runs in the top of the second inning as Strumpf blasted a two-run home run to left field to plate Michael Toglia who led off the inning with a ground-rule double to left-center field.
The Bruins offense was led by Strumpf and Sean Bouchard who each collected two hits in the game.
USC's best scoring chance came in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Trojans recorded three singles to load the bases with two outs, but Canning would get a ground ball to the shortstop to end the threat.
UCLA (22-20, 11-8) scored two runs on seven hits with no errors, while USC (19-23, 6-13) collected seven hits and did not commit an error.
The Bruins and Trojans will play game two of this three-game Pac-12 series on Friday starting at 7 p.m. from Dedeaux Field. The game will be televised live on Pac-12 Network with JB Long and Wes Clements on the call.
