Griffin Canning Selected No. 47 by the Angels

NEW YORK โ UCLA junior right-handed pitcher Griffin Canning was selected by the Los Angeles Angelsย as the 47th overall selection in the second round of the Major League Baseball Draft on Monday night.
The Coto de Caza, Calif. native was named an All-American by Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball after posting a 7-4 record with a 2.34 ERA in 17 starts. He struck out 140 batters compared to just 32 walks in 119.0 innings and held opponents to a .213 batting average. His 140 strikeouts are tied for the second-most in the NCAA this season. The Golden Spikes Award semifinalist also became just the sixth UCLA pitcher in program history to surpass 300 career strikeouts finishing with 301.
The All-Pac-12 selection tallied four complete games this season, including three complete game shutouts on the road during conference play. He recorded eight double-digit strikeout performances this year and three times tied his career-high with 12 punch outs. He earned Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week honors twice in 2017 after complete game shutouts with double-digit strikeouts at Stanford and at USC. Canning was also named to the Pac-12 All-Defensive Team.
Canning is currently ranked in several categories on NCAA's active career list including second in shutouts (4), fifth in complete games (8), eighth in strikeouts (301), 28th in innings pitched (292.0) and 49th in wins (19).
In 13 seasons as UCLA's head coach, Savage has produced 83 MLB draft selections, including 31 players being drafted within the first 10 rounds. Canning marks the program's 265th all-time MLB Draft selection.
Earlier in the day, Hunter Greene, who signed a NLI in November to play for the Bruins in 2018, was selected second overall to the Cincinnati Reds. Also, NLI signee Hagen Danner was selected No. 61 to the Toronto Blue Jays.
