
Sixteen Bruins Earn Pac-12 All-Academic Honors

Sixteen members of the UCLA track and field team received Pac-12 All-Academic honors, including first-team selection Millen Trujillo and second-team honorees Colin Burke, George Gleason, Kendall Gustafson and Torie Owers.
Trujillo, a redshirt freshman distance runner from Walnut, Calif., has posted a 3.84 cumulative GPA in Political Science. He was also a first-team Pac-12 All-Academic honoree in cross country and an MPSF all-academic selection in indoor track and field. Trujillo was honored last month as a UCLA All-Academic team member for cross country in 2016-17.
Burke, a redshirt freshman distance runner from Pleasanton, Calif., holds a 3.57 GPA in Economics. He earned second-team All-Pac-12 and Pac-12 All-Academic honors in the 2016 cross country season. Burke held the Bruins' top time in the 10,000 meters this season, 29:24.80.
Gleason, a sophomore distance runner from Huntington Beach, Calif., is an English major with a 3.70 GPA. He earned Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention honors in cross country in 2016, as well as 2017 MPSF All-Academic acclaim. He posted three of the Bruins' top 10 times in the 1,500m this year, including a 3:45.51 to win the USC dual meet.
Gustafson, a junior heptathlete from Los Angeles, Calif., has compiled a 3.80 GPA in Geography/Environmental Studies. She also earned MPSF Indoor All-Academic honors this season. Gustafson placed fifth in the heptathlon at the Pac-12 Championships and was an NCAA Regional qualifier in the high jump in both 2016 and 2017.
Owers, a senior thrower from Athens, Ga., recorded a 3.74 GPA in Business-Economics and earned her second consecutive Pac-12 all-academic selection. Owers was 2017 MPSF Indoor All-Academic honoree, a 2015-16 UCLA All-Academic team member and winner of the 2016-17 UCLA Academic & Student Services Success Award. She qualified to the NCAA Regionals in the shot put in 2017 and 2016 and was a NCAA qualifier in 2015.
Receiving honorable mention honors for UCLA were senior sprinter/jumper Austin Hazel, senior distance runner Austin O'Neil, junior sprinter Leon Powell, junior hurdler Misana Viltz, sophomore thrower Kai Wong, junior sprinter Jelvon Butler, sophomore jumper Christina Chenault, redshirt freshman distance runner Jackie Garner, junior pole vaulter Elleyse Garrett, junior sprinter/jumper Jessie Maduka, and sophomore pole vaulter Melissa Maneatis.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be either a starter or significant contributor.
