June 03, 2017 | Baseball
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Jon Olsen and Jake Bird combined to throw 12.1 innings, while Jack Stronach drove in the game-tying run in the eighth inning as the UCLA baseball team fell to San Diego State, 3-2, in 13 innings on Saturday from Blair Field. The loss was the second of the weekend for the Bruins and eliminated them from the Long Beach Regional.
The game was the longest of the season for the Bruins in terms of innings played and game duration as the game took just over five hours to complete.
After no runs scored in the first three extra innings, San Diego State scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 13th inning as Dean Nevarez reached base on a fielding error and later scored when Danny Sheehan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Tied at 2-2 in the ninth inning, UCLA looked to earn a walk-off victory as the Bruins loaded the bases with one out, but the Aztecs brought in closer CJ Saylor who retired the next two batters to send the game into extras.
Trailing by one run in the eighth inning, UCLA tied the game at 2-2 in dramatic fashion. Sean Bouchard led off the inning with a single to left-center field and after a Zander Clarke sacrifice bunt moved Bouchard to second base, pinch hitter Stronach ripped a two-out line drive into left field for the game-tying run.
SDSU scored the first runs of the ball game in the second inning as the Aztecs loaded the bases for Nevarez who hit a RBI-single followed by Tyler Adkinson driving in a run with a sacrifice fly to center field for a 2-0 advantage.
UCLA cut the deficit to 2-1 in the fourth inning as Michael Toglia recorded his second double of the regional and Jake Hirabayashi drove him home with a two-out single up the middle.
Bird (5-5) suffered the loss allowing one unearned run in 4.2 innings of work out of the bullpen scattering just two hits and tallied three strikeouts. UCLA starter Jon Olsen earned a no-decision after tossing 7.2 innings allowing just two runs on four hits.
San Diego State's Saylor (3-2) earned the win throwing the final 4.2 innings without allowing a run. SDSU starter Dominic Purpura allowed one run on four hits in 4.1 innings of work.
UCLA finished the season with an overall record of 30-27.
