SAN FRANCISCO -- Five members of the UCLA men's tennis team have received 2017 Pac-12 All-Academic honors, it was announced by the conference Wednesday. Martin Redlicki notched a Second Team selection, while Austin Rapp, Gage Brymer, Maxime Cressy and Logan Staggs earned Honorable Mention nods.
Redlicki, a double major in Political Science and Communications with a 3.60 grade-point average (GPA), completed his on-court campaign ranked No. 41 by Oracle/ITA among singles players, and No. 5 on the doubles list (with partner Evan Zhu). The junior registered a 29-9 overall singles record (22-4 in dual-match play) and a 24-7 doubles mark. Redlicki-Zhu made the quarterfinal round of last month's NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Doubles Championship. This is the second inclusion to the conference's academic team for the Boca Raton, Fla. native, who was named to the First Team in 2016.
Brymer followed up a 2016 Second-Team selection with Honorable Mention recognition in his final season. The senior from Irvine, Calif. went 21-11 overall in singles action and played almost exclusively on Court 1 in dual-match play to contribute to his honor as the ITA Southwest Region Senior Player of the Year.
Sophomore Cressy earned his Honorable Mention selection in his first season eligible. On the court, the Hermosa Beach, Calif. native went 20-11 in singles play and registered a 19-17 mark in doubles. Cressy clinched the Bruins' Round of 16 win over Texas A&M with a straight-set victory over the Aggies' Valentin Vacherot.
Austin Rapp (Rancho Mirage, Calif.), who made the Honorable Mention list for the second time (2016), tallied records of 18-13 in singles play and 22-13 in doubles. The junior won 10 of his last 12 doubles matches, including seven of eight with partner Joseph Di Giulio. The pair clinched the doubles point in the Bruins' 4-0 sweep of Ole Miss in the NCAA Second Round (May 13).
Staggs, a junior from Tracy, Calif., made the Honorable Mention list for the first all-academic honor of his career. The left-hander had a breakout 2017 with a 21-4 record, including a 19-2 dual-match season (12-0 on Court 4). Staggs completed his season with 14 consecutive singles wins.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall GPA and compete in at least 50% of the team's matches.
