EUGENE, Ore. – The UCLA track and field team completed day one of the NCAA Track and Field Championships, Wednesday at Historic Hayward Field. 

Sophomore Rai Benjamin highlighted the opening day of the championship by advancing in the 400m hurdles. Benjamin dipped under 49-seconds for the second consecutive race as he clocked 48.99 to win his heat and earn the automatic bid to the finals on Friday.

UCLA started off the meet in the men's 4x100m relay with a time of 39.89. The foursome of Eldridge Massington, Benjamin, Darnell Roberson and Leon Powell placed seventh in their heat and 22nd overall. 

Senior Austin O'Neil closed out his stellar UCLA career by placing eighth in his heat and 15th overall with a steeple time of 8:49.52.

Junior Misana Viltz followed by unfortunately hitting a hurdle late in the race to finish 24th. 

In the lone field event on the day for the Bruins, freshman Simon Litzell threw 221- 10 (67.62m) to place 16th in the javelin while fellow newcomer Marian Spannowsky was 23rd at 212-11 (64.90m).

Day two of the NCAA Championships will begin with the women's javelin at 5:45 p.m. The action on the track starts with the 800m at 6:14 p.m.
