July 18, 2017 | Men's Basketball
LOS ANGELES – Recent UCLA graduate Jerrold Smith of the men's basketball team has earned 2016-17 NABC Honors Court acclaim, as announced by the National Association of Basketball Coaches.
The annual NABC Honors Court recognizes men's basketball student-athletes who have excelled in academics during the past season. The NABC Honors Court seeks to highlight the talents and gifts these young men possess both on and off the court.
Smith, a 5-foot-11 guard from Los Angeles, graduated from UCLA with his degree in political science in June 2017. He spent the past three seasons on the UCLA men's basketball team after having graduated from St. Bernard's High School (Playa del Rey, Calif.) in 2013.
During his senior season, Smith played in 13 games, totaling seven points, two steals and one assist in 25 minutes. He made three shots from the field in limited action, but served a vital role as a point guard on the scout team in practice.
Smith joined the UCLA men's basketball program as a walk-on in Nov. 2014 after having competed on the scout team for the UCLA women's basketball program during his freshman year (2013-14).
Student-athletes are only eligible for the NABC Honors Court as a junior or senior varsity player. Student-athletes must have compiled a minimum 3.2 or higher cumulative grade point average at the conclusion of the 2016-17 academic year. In addition, student-athletes must have matriculated for at least one year at their current institution.
The NABC Honors Court was established in 2007 and is now in its 11th year. For additional information and to see Honors Court recipients from previous years, please visit www.nabc.org.
