No. 4 UCLA Staves Off Upset Bid By No. 20 LMU

The Bruins improved to 29-0 all-time over Loyola Marymount with today's 7-4 win.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. --ย The fourth-ranked UCLA Bruins staved off an upset bid from No. 20 Loyola Marymount to record a 7-4 victory at LMU's Burns Recreation Center on Friday afternoon in the first round of the Mountain Pacific Invitational. The Bruins improved to 9-0 while the Lionsย dropped toย 3-5 on the year. The Bruins improved to 29-0 all-time against Loyola Marymount.

Senior James Robinson led the Bruins in scoring with two goals. Senior Aleksandar Ruzicย got the start in goal and recorded eight saves while allowing two scores in 26:28 of action. Redshirt sophomore Jonathan Van De Velde played the final 5:32 of the fourth quarter, registering one save while surrendering two goals.

Junior Austin Rone got the Bruins on the board first off a nice feed from junior David Stiling (3:28). Senior Jack Grover ended the scoring in the first quarter with a goal at full strength (2:41) to give the Bruins a 2-0 advantage.

The second quarter was all LMU as the Bruins were held scoreless. Alessio Brunocelliย cut the lead to 2-1 with a score at the 4:04 mark of the second period. Zach Gleason tied the game at 2-2 (3:24) with a penalty shot conversion to end the scoring in the first half.ย 

Robinson put the Bruins back in front, 3-2, with the only goal of the third quarterย (4:16).

UCLA opened the final period with a score from freshman Luke Henrikssonย (7:32) to extend the lead to 4-2. Senior Max Irving added an insurance goal two minutes later (5:32) to extend the lead to 5-2. Sophomore Eric Goldenberg gave the Bruins a 6-2 lead with a power play goal (3:14) and Robinson added his second of the game to make it 7-2 (2:46). Austin Clark trimmed the lead to 7-3 with a score from the front court (2:34) and then Brunocelli added his second of the game (0:29) on a power play to provide the 7-4 final.

The Bruins return to action on Saturday, Sept. 23 with a quarterfinal game of the Mountain Pacific Invitational vs. No. 5 Pacific at 10:15 a.m. PT.
