No. 3 UCLA Drops MPSF Opener at No. 4 California, 9-7

BERKELEY, Calif. -- No. 3 UCLA (19-2) dropped its MPSF opener, 9-7, at No. 4 California (15-3) on Saturday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Bruins fell to 87-68-1 all-time against the Golden Bears.

The Bruins were led by freshman Ashworth Molthen who scored a game-high three goals. Redshirt junior Alex Wolf started in the cage and went the distance, recording 12 saves while allowing nine goals.

Jordan Hoover opened the scoring in the game with a goal from at two meters (6:00) for the Golden Bears. Sophomore Nicolas Saveljic tied the game at 1-1 with a power play strike (1:59). Nikos Delagrammatikas gave the Golden Bears a 2-1 lead (0:28) on a rebound score on a power play after the Bruins got a field block. That ended the scoring in the first period.

Spencer Farrar scored on a counter for Cal (6:47) to open the scoring in the second period giving Cal a 3-1 lead. Saveljic scored his second of the game on a perfect lob shot (4:26) to cut the lead to 3-2. Delagrammatikas then answered with his second score of the game from the front court (2:35) to push the lead to 4-2. Safak Simsek scored his first of the game for the Golden Bears (1:51) to push the lead to 5-2. Then freshman Ashworth Molthen scored on a power play (1:25) to trim the lead to 5-3. That score would hold up at the break.

Molthen opened the scoring in the third with his second goal of the game (6:04) on a power play to cut the lead to 5-4. But Vassilis Tzavaras answered with a power play goal (5:30) to push the lead to 6-4. Johnny Hooper then scored his first of the game for Cal (2:25) to make it a three-goal game. The Golden Bears would take a 7-4 lead into the fourth period.

Sophomore Felix Brozyna-Vilim opened the scoring in the fourth quarter (5:14) with a powerful goal at set to cut the lead to 7-5. Senior Warren Snyder scored his first of the game on a skip shot (2:13) to cut the lead to 7-6. UCLA had a chance to tie the game, but the Bruins turned the ball over and then Hooper scored his second of the game on a penalty shot (0:27) to extend the lead to 8-6. Molthen answered immediately with a goal (0:18) to complete a hat trick. Marko Valecic scored a cheap goal with one second remaining to provide the 9-7 final.

The Bruins return to action on Saturday, Nov. 3 when they host No. 2 Stanford on "Senior Day" at 3:30 p.m. PT at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center.
