Bruins Shine at Fall Championships
November 11, 2018 | Women's Tennis
SURPRISE, Ariz. โ The UCLA women's tennis team concluded its fall slate of matches Friday, as five Bruins participated in the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships. The Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex hosted the event.
A pair of UCLA doubles teams reached the quarterfinal round of the event's doubles tournament, while freshman Elysia Bolton made the final eight of the singles competition thanks to a run that included wins over a pair of ranked opponents.
The Bruin doubles duo of seniors Gabby Andrews and Ayan Broomfield, which claimed the ITA Regional Championships title to earn an automatic bid, continued its dominant fall play with a 6-3, 6-3 win versus TJ Fumagalli and Kristin Kerrigan of Air Force in the opening round. The Round of 16 saw Andrews-Broomfield notch another straight-set victory, 6-3, 7-5, over Anna Brogan and Maria Genovese of Tyler Junior College to set up a rematch of the ITA Regional Championships final. This time, the Pepperdine pair of No. 26 Ashley Lahey and Evgeniya Levashova came out on the winning side of a three-set showdown, 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 (8).
Andrews-Broomfield finished the fall with a record of 10-1, with championship performances at the ITA Regionals and the Jack Kramer Collegiate Tournament.
Also turning in an impressive performance in the Fall Nationals doubles tournament was the Bruins' 29th-ranked tandem of Bolton and Jada Hart. The UCLA pair began its time in Surprise with an upset win, posting a 6-4, 6-2 decision over No. 3-ranked and top-seeded Emily Arbuthnott and Michaela Gordon of Stanford. A 7-5, 6-3 triumph over Kate Fahey and Brienne Minor of Michigan followed, making UCLA the only program with two teams in the doubles quarterfinals. Bolton-Hart's journey came to an end there, however, as South Carolina's Mia Horvit-Ingrid Gamarra Martins edged the Bruins, 7-6 (4), 2-6, 1-0 (6).
Bolton also shined in singles play, as the 13th-seeded freshman defeated Princeton's Stephane Schrage, 6-3, 6-2, to get started. The next round put Bolton face to face with 2017 NCAA singles champion Brienne Minor of Michigan, but the Bruin was up to the challenge. The Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y. native overpowered No. 119 Minor with a 6-2, 6-3 display. The talented field yielded another stiff test in No. 3 Estela Perez-Somarriba of Miami, who defeated Bolton in the quarterfinal round of the Oracle ITA Masters in September. Bolton would register an impressive turnaround, though, knocking off Perez-Somarriba, 6-3, 6-2. The quarterfinals would signify the end for Bolton, though, as No. 2 Makenna Jones of North Carolina turned in a 6-2, 6-3 victory to advance into the final four.
Sophomore Abi Altick, ranked No. 52 by Oracle ITA, matched up with No. 20 Marianna Petrei of Idaho in the singles opening round. Altick took the match's opening set, but Petrei rebounded to take the next two and the overall win, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. The consolation round saw Altick pick up a win over Emory's Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico, 6-0, 6-3, before bowing out against No. 35 Sophie Whittle of Gonzaga in another three-set heartbreaker, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
The fall schedule saw Bolton tally a 10-4 record in her first matches as a Bruin. Of those 10 wins, two came over ranked opponents. Broomfield also performed admirably in singles play, going 7-2 including a final-round appearance at Kramer. In addition to the Andrews-Broomfield doubles success, Bolton-Hart went 9-3 in tournament action.
