Onyenwere, UCLA Use Big Second Half to Upend No. 14 Georgia, 80-69

November 14, 2018 | Women's Basketball

LOS ANGELES โ€“ Sophomore Michaela Onyenwere registered a career-high 25 points and 11 rebounds, and the No. 23 UCLA women's basketball team used an 18-4 run to close out (No. 14/13) Georgia and complete the upset on Wednesday afternoon by a final count of 80-69.
ย
For UCLA (2-1), it marked the program's first win over the Bulldogs (2-1) at Pauleyย Pavilion, and the Bruins extended their current home winning streak to 11 games.
ย
UCLA trailed by as many as 12 in the contest but used a concerted effort both on the glass and the defensive end to get back in it, and behind 30 second half points combined between Onyenwere and senior Kennedy Burke, the Bruins were able to walk off the court victorious on Field Trip Day at Pauley Pavilion..
ย
Onyenwere collected her fourth career double-double and also posted a career-high four assists, while Burke finished with 21 points on 8-for-10 shooting to go along with four steals, four assists and four rebounds.
ย
Senior Japreece Dean tallied 17 points and five assists to go along with a career-high seven made free throws, while redshirt freshman Lindsey Corsaro chipped in eight points.
ย
The Storyline
The Bruins got off to a good start, opening the game with an 8-5 advantage after a layup by Burke at the 6:32 mark. However, UCLA was held to just one field goal over the next five minutes, as Georgia responded with a 17-4 run to cap the first stanza and take a 22-12 lead.
ย
In the second quarter, UCLA fought back, at one point nailing four consecutive field goals to cut the deficit to just two. Burke and Dean connected on back-to-back triples, and then Burke scored again in the paint to make it 30-28 Georgia with 4:27 left to play.
ย
A bucket inside by Onyenwere pulled the Bruins within four (35-31) late in the quarter before the Bulldogs mustered a 5-0 spurt to enter the locker room up nine (40-31).ย
ย
Although UCLA didn't hit its first field goal of the second half until the 5:58 mark of the third, the basket sparked a 6-0 run to pull the Bruins within five (44-39) after Onyenwere scored inside.
ย
Burke helped the Bruins seize full momentum late in the third quarter, finding Onyenwere on the break for the layup before getting a big-time rejection on the other end. She later tied the game at 49 in the closing moments of the frame, intercepting Gabby Connaly's pass for finish on the other end.
ย
Onyenwere notched her new career high for points midway through the fourth, scoring on the run to tie the game at 62 with 5:06 remaining.
ย
Senior Lajahna Drummer's lone field goal of the game was nothing less than imperative, as she fought through contact to notch the and-one that put the Bruins up three (68-65) with 2:58 on the clock.
ย
Then, Onyenwere made another game-changing play, as the sophomore came out of nowhere to clean up a miss on the fast break to extend UCLA's lead to five (70-65).
ย
The Bruins forced five turnovers in the final 2:07, and UCLA went 8-for-10 from the line in the final minute of the affair to earn the win.
