LOS ANGELES โ Second-seeded UCLA earned a 5-0 victory for the third consecutive round, this time defeating North Carolina State in the NCAA Round of 16 Sunday evening. The Bruins advance to the quarterfinals, where they will face top-seeded North Carolina in Cary, N.C. on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 5pm ET.
Jessie Fleming led the Bruins, scoring the game's first two goals. She gave UCLA an early 1-0 lead with a one-touch shot off a dummied pass from Ashley Sanchez at 5:11. Sanchez hooked Fleming up again at 21:49 with a corner kick that was dummied by Olivia Athens and Viviana Villacorta, falling right to Fleming with space, and she buried the shot from 15 feet out for her second goal of the game.
The Bruins (17-3-1) scored again off the corner kick in the 42nd minute. Sanchez sent a corner kick into the box, and after a scramble, Karina Rodriguez found the ball at her feet, and she fired a right-footed shot past NC State goalkeeper Sydney Wootten for her third goal of the year.
Two late-game goals by Chloe Castaneda in the 83rd minute and Hailie Mace in the 85th minute brought the Bruins to their final goal count of five.
With two assists, Sanchez earned her fifth and sixth assists of the tournament, setting a new UCLA record for NCAA Tournament single-season assists. Sanchez also tied the school record for consecutive games with a goal or assist, scoring at least a point in her 12th consecutive game, a streak that coincides with UCLA's 12-game winning streak. The sophomore is also one assist away from tying Iris Mora's school single-season assist record of 15.
