UCLA head women's golf coach Carrie Forsyth has announced the Bruins' 2019 recruiting class, as Ty Akabane (Danville, Calif.), Emilie Alba Paltrinieri (Milan, Italy) and Annabel Wilson (Gawley's Gate, Northern Ireland) have signed their National Letters of Intent.
"We are so pleased to announce the signing of three extraordinary players to the UCLA women's golf team," Forsyth said. "These young women represent the future of our program and we are looking forward to many successful and exciting years ahead. All three will have an immediate impact on our team next fall."
Akabane won the 2018 California Women's Amateur Championship. She finished 9-under in stroke play to earn medalist honors by seven shots, going on to win five match-play contests. In 2018, Akabane has appeared in eight AJGA tournaments, posting Top 20 finishes in all of them, including a pair of T-9s at the Buick Shanshan Feng Girls Invitational and the Girls Junior PGA Championship. She has played in a pair of USGA events, including the 2017 U.S. Women's Open and the 2018 U.S. Women's Amateur, where she tied for 22nd.
"Ty is one of the rising stars in amateur golf," Forsyth said. "We are thrilled to have the opportunity to coach her. She brings a meticulous and exceptional work ethic to our program, and is one of the finest young women we have ever encountered throughout the recruiting process. Ty is a perfect fit for our team, and we believe that she will be an impact player."
"I decided to attend UCLA because of the great balance of academics and athletics," Akabane said. "Coach Carrie (Forsyth) and Alicia (Um Holmes) are such awesome coaches and people who I really want to play for."
Paltrinieri, a member of the Italian National Team, helped her country win the 2018 European Girls' Team Championship. She also represented Italy at the Women's Amateur Team Championships – Espirito Santo Trophy. The match-play star reached the quarterfinals at the Ladies' British Open Amateur Championship and the Round of 16 at the Girls' British Open Amateur Championship. Paltrinieri, who appeared in the 2016 and 2018 Junior Ryder Cups, finished 10th at the European Ladies' Amateur Championship, while also winning the Italian Ladies Stroke Play Championship (Isa Goldschmid Trophy) and the Italian Ladies Match Play (Giuseppe Silva Trophy).
"Emilie is a star on the Italian National Team," Forsyth said. "She is an incredible athlete and student, and she has a ton of experience playing internationally. Emilie is one of the best match-play players that we have ever seen, and we feel that her experience in this format will be really helpful to our success at future NCAA Championships."
Wilson represented Ireland at the 2018 Ladies' Home Internationals, the European Ladies' Team Championship and the Women's Amateur Team Championships – Espirito Santo Trophy. She reached the Round of 32 in a pair of match-play events, the Girls' British Open Amateur Championship and the Ladies' British Open Amateur Championship. This year, Wilson also tied for eighth at the Portuguese International Ladies Amateur Championship, tied for ninth at the Spanish Ladies' Amateur Championship and placed Top 20 at the World Junior Girls Championship and the European Ladies' Amateur Championship.
"Annabel is a member of the Ireland National Team, and is one of the most gifted players we have ever recruited," Forsyth said. "We believe that her golf game has unlimited potential and we can't wait to see what she does in college. Annabel's golf swing is beautiful and she has a calmness about her that will serve her well under pressure."
"(UCLA) has the best program in terms of improving players so that they can compete on the LPGA (Tour)," Wilson said as to why she wanted to become a Bruin.
