UCLA Cruises to 5-0 NCAA First Round Win over SJSU
November 09, 2018 | Women's Soccer
LOS ANGELES - Led by the terrific trio of Ashley Sanchez, Jessie Fleming and Hailie Mace, No. 2 seed UCLA cruised to a 5-0 victory over San Jose State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Sanchez scored two goals, Fleming had a goal and two assists, and Mace recorded two assists.
"I think our movement was really good," said UCLA head coach Amanda Cromwell, who earned her 100th coaching victory at UCLA. "We're seeing Jessie and Hailie and Ashley combine really well on the left side. At this point in the season, you want to see your players really feeding each other and being dynamic in the attack, and that's what's going on there with them."
UCLA (15-3-1) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first half, with Fleming scoring on a header in the box at 12:19 from a Mace cross. Fleming and Mace had a hand in the Bruins' second goal, with Mace sending a ball through to Fleming, who laid off a pass to Sanchez on the left side. Sanchez finished far post for her ninth goal of the season.
Viviana Villacorta increased UCLA's lead to 3-0 at 30:23 after Delanie Sheehan stole a pass from midfield and sent a through ball to Villacorta, who beat the onrushing goalkeeper for her fourth goal of the year. Just 1:05 later, Sanchez recorded her second goal of the game and 10th of the season on a long-range shot that went off the goalkeeper's hands.
The Bruins added a fifth goal early in the second half when a Sanchez shot was handled in the box by a San Jose State defender. Marley Canales converted the penalty kick in the 49th minute for her first goal of the year.

The Bruins dominated possession in the game and outshot San Jose State, 24-2, recording 14 shots on goal to the Spartans' two. UCLA goalkeeper Teagan Micah earned the shutout, her sixth solo shutout of the year. San Jose State goalkeeper Paige Simoneau made nine saves.
UCLA, winners of 10 consecutive games, will host Minnesota in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, Nov. 16 at 7:30pm. The Gophers advanced after a 2-0 win over Auburn. San Jose State ends its season at 9-7-6.
