CHICAGO – Sophomore Michaela Onyenwere collected her third double-double of the season, and the UCLA women's basketball team forced 27 turnovers in a 78-47 win over Illinois-Chicago on Wednesday night at Credit Union 1 Arena.
Onyenwere scored 19 points to go along with 11 rebounds, eight of which came on the offensive end, a career high for the sophomore. Lajahna Drummer matched a career high with 16 points on 6-for-7 shooting.
The Bruins pulled down 29 offensive rebounds and scored 26 points off turnovers, and UCLA's 56 total boards marked a season-high effort.
The Storyline
Drummer scored seven of UCLA's first 12 points, as the Bruins started the game on a 12-0 run and hit their first five from the field. UCLA's swarming defensive pressure forced 12 Flame turnovers in the first quarter, which turned into 14 Bruin points. UCLA entered the second quarter up 21-5.
UCLA (6-5) kept UIC scoreless in the opening five minutes of the second quarter, allowing the Bruins to extend their lead to 20 (25-5) after a put-back by Onyenwere.
A 6-0 run by the Flames helped them trim UCLA's advantage to 14 (28-14) before Onyenwere nailed a mid-range jumper and went 2-for-2 at the stripe to spark an 11-0 Bruin run, which was capped by seven straight points from senior Japreece Dean.
The Bruins entered the locker room up 39-15, owning a 30-12 advantage on the glass and scoring 21 points off turnovers.
UIC (2-7) outscored the Bruins 22-19 in the third, but UCLA still had a 21-point (58-37) cushion entering the fourth quarter. After the Flames pulled to within 18 (58-40), Drummer matched her career high of 16 points with a bucket inside to push the Bruin lead back to 20.
UCLA closed the contest with a 16-5 run, forcing UIC to go 2-for-13 down the stretch to make the final score of 78-47 the Bruins' largest lead of the affair.
