No. 12 UCLA Falls to Baylor, 8-6

LOS ANGELES - Jeremy Ydens drove in two runs and scored once, while Daniel Amaral hit a home run as the No. 12 UCLA baseball team dropped its first game of the season to Baylor, 8-6, on Saturday at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Kyle Mora suffered the loss for UCLA throwing oneย inning out of the bullpen allowing one run. Baylor's Drew Robertson earned his first win of the season after recording one out in the eighth inning andย Troy Montemayor collected his third save of the season.

Trailingย 6-4, Baylor was able to tie the game after Shea Langeliers drove in a run with a single to right field in the seventh inning and Cole Haring hit a solo home run to left field in the eighth inning.

UCLA looked to take the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Bruins loaded the bases with just one out. Baylor reliever Ryan Leckich was then able to record a strikeout, followed by Chase Strumpf hitting a hard line drive to left field off of Robertson but directly at T.J. Raguse to end the threat.

The Bears grabbed the two-run advantage in the top of the ninth inning as Langeliers hit a two-run home run down the left-field line off of Brian Gadsby for the 8-6 final score.

Baylor got on the board first in the top of the first inning as Davis Wendzel hit a two-run home run to right-center field. UCLA responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead, 3-2, when Amaral led off with a solo home run to straight-away center field and Ydens hit a two-run triple off the left-center field wall.

The Bruins made the score 4-2 in the bottom of the second inning off a Michael Toglia sacrifice fly to right field, but the Bears answered in the top of the third inning with a two-out two-run double by Andy Thomas to right-center field to tie the score at 4-4.

UCLA regained the lead in the in the fifth inning, 6-4, when Ryan Kreidler lifted a fly ball to right field with the bases loaded to bring home Chase Strumpf with a sacrifice fly, but Ydens was also able to score after the right fielder made a throwing error back into the infield.

Jon Olsen tossed 5.2 innings allowing four runs on three hits and four walks with five strikeouts for the no-decision. Baylor starter Kyle Hill went 4.0 innings allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits with four walks.

UCLA (5-1) finished with six runs on seven hits with one error, while Baylor (3-2) ended the game with eight runs on nine hits with two errors.
