No. 3 UCLA Wins Two on the Day

The Bruins picked up 3-2 victories over No. 17 Stanford and at No. 5 Hawai'i.

HONOLULU -- No. 3 UCLA (2-1) continued play at the Rainbow Classic hosted by the University of Hawai'i at Ching Complex. The Bruins opened the day with a 3-2 win over No. 17 Stanford (0-4) on Sunday afternoon.

Freshman Mac May made her season debut on court five and paired with Savvy Simo to take down Stanford's Kat Anderson and Michaela Keefe, 21-13, 21-10.

UCLA took a 2-0 lead when senior Elise Zappia and Madi Yeomans defeated Stanford's Payton Chang and Catherine Raquel in straight sets, 21-16, 21-15.

Stanford got on the board when Kate Formico and Courtney Bowen beat freshman Megan Muret and junior Izzy Carey in three sets, 17-21, 22-20, 15-8.

But junior Sarah Sponcil and sophomore Lily Justine secured the dual victory when the beat Morgan Hentz and Amelia Smith, 21-16, 21-19, to give the Bruins a 3-1 advantage.

On court one, Stanford's Kathryn Plummer and Sunny Villapando won a three-set thriller over UCLA's junior pair of Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara, 18-21, 21-19, 15-13.

UCLA (3-1) exacted revenge on #5 Hawai'i (2-1), handing the Rainbow Wahine their first defeat of the young season in the Bruins' final dual of the classic.

UCLA took a 1-0 lead after the Bruins' Mac May and Savvy Simo defeated Paige Dreeuws and Hannah Zalopany in straight sets on court five, 21-14, 21-17.

The Rainbow Wahine tied it at 1-1 on court four when Ari Homayun and Amy Ozee of Hawai'i defeated Megan Muret and Izzy Carey in straight sets, 21-17, 21-18.

UCLA went up 2-1 on court three when Elise Zappia and Madi Yeomans took down Morgan Martin and Lea Monkhouse in a three-set thriller, 21-13, 15-21, 18-16.

Hawai'i tied it up at 2-2 with a straight-set win on court two as Emily Maglio and Ka'iwi Schucht defeated UCLA's Sarah Sponcil and Lily Justine, 21-13, 21-13.

On court one, UCLA's Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara clinched the 3-2 dual victory with a 21-18, 21-16 victory over Carly Kan and Laurel Weaver.

The Bruins return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 1:00 p.m. PT when they take on #2 Pepperdine at USC's Merle Norman Stadium on Pac-12 Networks. The Bruins will also face #1 USC at 2:30 p.m. PT, also on the Pac-12 Networks.
