UCLA Scores Three Perfect 10s in Win over Stanford
March 11, 2018 | Gymnastics
Stanford, Calif. - Christine Peng-Peng Lee and Kyla Ross combined for three perfect 10s to lead UCLA to a 197.800-196.650 victory at Stanford on Sunday afternoon. Lee was truly perfect today, scoring 10.0s on her two events, uneven bars and balance beam, and Ross scored her first perfect 10 of the season on uneven bars, the second of back-to-back 10s scored by the Bruins.
The two 10s on bars marked the first perfect marks for UCLA on uneven bars this season, while Lee's 10 on beam was the team's third on the event, all scored by Lee, who tied Kate Richardson's school record with four career 10s on beam. Lee now has seven career perfect 10s, while Ross has five.
The back-to-back 10s from Lee and Ross mitigated a pair of mistakes made from two of the first four uneven bars competitors, allowing UCLA to take an early lead, 49.250-49.150. The Bruins picked things up with a dynamic vault rotation that started with a 9.9 from Nia Dennis and a stuck vault by Anna Glenn that scored 9.85. After Pauline Tratz's 9.825, Kyla Ross stuck her vault for a 9.9, and Felicia Hano and Napualani Hall hit their Yurchenko 1.5 vaults for 9.875 and 9.85, respectively.
Leading 98.625-97.825 at the halfway mark, UCLA pulled away with a 49.600 on floor. The Bruins recorded five 9.9+ scores, dropping a 9.875. Madison Kocian started the rotation with a season-high 9.925. Ross and Dennis dropped back-to-back 9.9s, and Tratz tied her career-best with a 9.925. Hano scored 9.875, and Katelyn Ohashi closed with a 9.95 to help the Bruins record their third 49.6+ team score on floor this season.
UCLA changed its competition order on beam in the final rotation, moving Grace Glenn to leadoff and shifting Brielle Nguyen to third. The move paid dividends, as Glenn scored 9.925, and Nguyen earned 9.85. Ohashi followed in the four spot with a 9.975, and Lee wrapped up the meet with her third 10 on beam this season to give the Bruins 49.575 on beam.
Stanford senior Elizabeth Price won the all-around with a 39.825. Ross was second with 39.625. Price also won vault with a 9.975 and floor with a 10.0.
The Bruins will have a quick turnaround before their next meet, as they will host San Jose State on Tuesday, Mar. 13 at 7pm in Pauley Pavilion. The meet is Senior Day for UCLA, who will honor its senior class of Rechelle Dennis, Napualani Hall, JaNay Honest, Christine Peng-Peng Lee and Sonya Meraz in post-meet ceremonies.
