No. 16 UCLA Rallies Past WSU, 8-5

LOS ANGELES – Jake Hirabayashi drove in three runs on two base hits, while Jeremy Ydens went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Chase Strumpf hit a home run as the No. 16 UCLA Baseball team rallied from a 5-1 deficit to defeat Washington State, 8-5, on Saturday from Jackie Robinson Stadium. With the victory, the Bruins earn the series win having won the opener on Friday, 6-5.

UCLA starter Zach Pettway threw 7.0 innings allowing five runs on nine hits with six strikeouts, while Holden Powell earned his first career win throwing 0.2 scoreless innings in relief. Kyle Mora picked up his second save of the weekend after throwing the final inning without allowing a run.

Trailing by one run in the eighth inning, the Bruins would score four runs to take an 8-5 lead. Jack Stronach led off with a single and after a Ryan Kreidler walk came home on a RBI-double down the third-base line by Daniel Amaral to tie the game. Two batters later Ydens would drive in the go-ahead run with a single to center field and Hirabayashi would make it a three-run advantage as he hit a two-run single down the first-base line.

UCLA scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning as Ydens lifted a fly ball to left field to bring in Amaral on a sacrifice fly. Washington State would score five runs in the top of the third inning to take a 5-1 advantage highlighted by back-to-back home runs by Justin Harrer and Blake Clanton.

The Bruins chipped away at the lead as Strumpf blasted a two-run home run to left-center field in the bottom of the third inning, followed by Hirabayashi hitting a RBI-single to left field in the fourth inning to make the score 5-4.

Washington's State Ryan Walker suffered the loss allowing four runs on four hits in 1.1 innings in relief as starter Scotty Sunitsch went 4.0 innings allowing four runs on four hits with five walks.

UCLA (12-4, 2-0) scored eight runs on nine hits with two errors, while Washington State (4-11, 0-2) ended the game with five runs on 12 hits and no errors.

The series finale of this Pac-12 conference weekend will be played on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. PT from Jackie Robinson Stadium.
