No. 15 UCLA Falls at Cal in Series Finale, 8-3

BERKELEY, Calif. โ Garrett Mitchell totaled two hits and two runs, while Kevin Kendall went 2-for-4 and drove in a run as the No. 15 UCLA baseball team fell in the series finale at California, 8-3, on Saturday afternoon at Evans Diamond. With the loss, the Bruins drop their first Pac-12 series of the season.
Tanner Dodson (1-0) earned the win throwing the final 2.2 innings without allowing a run and surrendered four hits. Nathan Hadley (0-1) suffered the loss allowing three runs, one earned, in 1.1 innings in relief.
UCLA trailed 2-0 in the top of the fifth inning, but cut the lead when Mitchell led off with a single through the right side and scored on a two-out single to right field by Kevin Kendall to make the score 2-1.
The Bruins took their first lead of the game in the seventh inning with two runs for a 3-2 advantage. Mitchell reached third base on a throwing error by the pitcher and pinch-hitter Jarron Silva scored him on an infield single to tie the game. Jack Stronach gave UCLA the lead later in the inning with a fly ball to left field to plate Silva with a sacrifice fly.
The Golden Bears regained the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning with a six-run frame. Cal was able to load the bases on a pair of UCLA miscues on bunts leading to Darren Baker tying the game on a RBI-single to second base. Max Flower gave California the lead with a sacrifice fly to center field one batter later. Andrew Vaughn put the game out of reach with a three-run, bases-clearing double to right field.
California got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning as Vaughn hit a two-run home run to center field.
Cal starter Aaron Shortridge allowed three runs, one earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work, while UCLA starter Jack Ralston threw 2.0 innings allowing two runs on four hits.
UCLA (16-7, 6-3) scored three runs on 11 hits with one error, while California (16-10, 3-6) finished the game with eight runs on 12 hits with one error.
The Bruins return to Southern California next week when they take on Loyola Marymount on the road on Tuesday, April 3, before hosting Stanford in a marquee Pac-12 series at Jackie Robinson Stadium beginning on Friday, April 6 at 6 p.m. PT.
