April 09, 2018 | Baseball
SAN FRANCISCO - UCLA sophomore Chase Strumpf has been named the Pac-12 Baseball Player of the Week for the first time this season, announced the Pac-12 conference on Monday. It is the first time he has won the award in his career and the first Bruins position player to win the weekly award since Kort Peterson in 2016.
Strumpf, an infielder from Dana Point, Calif., led the UCLA offense that won two out of three games at home over No. 2 Stanford to claim the series victory and also earned a 13-1 win at Loyola Marymount. He hit a team-best .667 (8-12) with a 1.250 slugging percentage, .789 on-base percentage, eight RBIs and eight runs scored over the four contests. He also recorded a pair of home runs, one each in the final two games against Stanford.
Strumpf hit a two-run double in series opener against the Cardinal en route to an 8-4 victory and hit a solo home run and crossed home twice in the series finale that the Bruins won, 7-2. The second baseman went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBIs in Saturday's high scoring 13-11 loss.
Strumpf currently ranks top-10 in the Pac-12 conference and is the team leader in slugging percentage, RBIs, home runs and walks.
UCLA will begin a four-game road swing away from Jackie Robinson Stadium on Tuesday when it travels to Long Beach State before heading to Salt Lake City for a three-game series at Utah starting on Friday at 5 p.m. PT.
