INDIANAPOLIS โ The Pac-12 regular-season and tournament champion UCLA men's tennis team was awarded the No. 2 seed and hosting privileges for the upcoming NCAA Division Championships, the selection committee announced Tuesday.
The NCAA appearance marks the 42nd in a row for the Bruins, who are 26-2 following their fourth Pac-12 tournament title in seven years. The top-seeded Bruins defeated crosstown rival and third-seeded USC in the final, 4-1, at Libbey Park in Ojai, Calif.
The Bruins will host Big Sky champion Idaho on Saturday, May 12 at noon. The Vandals posted an overall record of 15-7, won 10 of 11 regular-season conference clashes and swept through its conference tournament to earn their spot. UCLA has never faced Idaho.
UCLA-Idaho will represent the second men's match of the day at Los Angeles Tennis Center, as at-large pick Texas Tech (19-10) and West Coast Conference titleholder San Diego (16-8) are set to square off at 9 a.m. The winners will meet Sunday at 1 p.m. UCLA's women's tennis team was also selected to host first- and second-round matches, with those set for Friday and Saturday.
Thirty-one conference champions earned the tournament's automatic bids. Thirty-three others rounded out the 64-team field as at-large selections. Winners of each first- and second-round regional will come together in Winston-Salem, N.C., where they will compete for the national championship from May 18-22. Top-seeded Wake Forest host the final four rounds at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex, which was opening in the summer of 2011.
All matches will be regulation dual matches, consisting of three doubles matches and six singles matches. The first team to collect two doubles victories shall be declared the winner. Likewise, the match will be stopped when the first team reaches the necessary four points to clinch the overall win.
