UCLA Wins Crosstown Cup for Second-Straight Year
May 17, 2018 | Bruin Athletics
For the second-straight year, UCLA has won the annual head-to-head all-sports competition with crosstown rival USC, taking the Crosstown Cup by a final score of 115-75. This is the third time in the last four years that UCLA has claimed the Cup.
"Winning the Crosstown Cup with our highest-ever points total is a tremendous accomplishment that reflects our commitment to broad-based excellence," said UCLA Director of Athletics Dan Guerrero. "The UCLA-USC rivalry is one of the most unique and storied rivalries in all of collegiate athletics, and it's always exciting to see the teams bring out the best in each other. We are proud to repeat as Crosstown Cup champions."
Each of the 19 sports in which both UCLA and USC field teams counts for 10 points. All 10 points for a sport are awarded to the winner of the most head-to-head contests in that sport (if both schools win an equal amount of matchups in a sport, the 10 points are split). For sports that do not feature a head-to-head competition between the two schools, the highest finisher in Pac-12 or MPSF Championship play will receive the 10 points. UCLA's 115 total points are the most by a Bruin team in the new scoring system that was implemented in 2014-15.
The Bruins earned 10 points from 10 teams - women's cross country, women's soccer, men's water polo, men's basketball, women's basketball, men's tennis, beach volleyball, women's tennis, baseball, and women's golf. Five points were earned by women's volleyball, swimming and diving, and men's volleyball. UCLA went 22-13-1 in head-to-head matchups, including wins at the Pac-12 Beach Volleyball and Men's Tennis Tournaments to win conference titles and at the NCAA Men's Water Polo Championships to win the national title.
While the rivalry dates back to the 1920s, the official head-to-head battle to determine an annual all-sports champion started in the 2001-02 season. With the conclusion of this year's competition, the Bruins have now taken four of the last six showdowns with the Trojans.
