May 06, 2018 | Track & Field
PALO ALTO, Calif. – After winning two events and setting three collegiate bests en route to a second-place finish on the opening day of the Pac-12 Combined Events Championships hosted by Stanford, UCLA senior Kendall Gustafson took home another event win on Sunday, in the javelin throw, to secure a final second place finish with a career-high 5,886 points.
Redshirt sophomore Christina Chenault, who was in eighth place at the conclusion of Saturday's events, also maintained her position with a final point tally of 5,072.
The women's Multis got underway on Sunday with the long jump. Gustafson placed fifth in that event, hitting a 5.72m (18-09.25) mark on her second attempt. In her first start in the long jump in the 2018 season, Chenault recorded a 5.22m (17-01.5) jump to finish in 11th place.
Next up was the javelin throw, an event in which Gustafson ended up dominating the competition. Her best throw was the 46.56m (152-09) mark on her third attempt, but each of her three tries (43.17m on her first, 46.53m on her second) were better than anyone else's top mark among the field. Only two other competitors cracked the 40-meter mark, and second-place Alissa Brooks-Johnson was over 16 feet shorter than Gustafson's top result.
Chenault was the ninth-place finisher in the javelin, launching a throw of 35.01m (114-10) on her last attempt.
Chenault was UCLA's top finisher in the final event of the day, the 800-meter run. She set a new outdoor collegiate-best with a time of 2:17.06, which was good for fifth place. Gustafson meanwhile logged a time of 2:24.49 to take 10th place.
On Saturday, Gustafson set new PRs in the 200m dash (25.02), 100m hurdles (14.08), and high jump (1.80m, 5-10.75). She won both the high jump and the shot put (13.08m, 42-11). Chenault countered with a pair of top-five finishes.
Brooks-Johnson, of Washington State, was the top finisher in the heptathlon with 5,977 points.
The Bruins will return to Stanford next week for the complete Pac-12 Championships, held on May 12-13.
