UCLA Sends Players to Summer Leagues Across the Country

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA baseball program will send 24 players to various summer baseball leagues around the country, including the Cape Cod League, Northwoods League and West Coast League.

The prestigious Cape Cod League will host seven Bruins this summer. Infielder Michael Toglia returns for his second season with Cotuit where he hit .248 with seven home runs and 27 RBIs last summer. All-Pac-12 selection Jeremy Ydens leads a group of four Bruins playing in Wareham along with right-handed pitcher Ryan Garcia, infielder Ryan Kreidler and right-handed pitcher Jack Ralston. Left-handed pitcher Nick Scheidler, who appeared in a team-high 37 games, will play for Chatham, while right-handed pitcher Kyle Mora, 6-3 with a 1.89 ERA in 2018, will throw for Harwich.

A total of six Bruins will participate in the Northwoods League including three in Mankato with infielder Kyle Cuellar, outfielder Garrett Mitchell and infielder RJ Teijeiro. In addition, outfielder Jordan Prendiz will play in Fond du Lac, outfielder Jarron Silva will be in Lacrosse and right-handed pitcher Michael Townsend will compete for Waterloo.

Rounding out the summer league placement is outfielder Jake Pries playing for the OC Riptide in the California Collegiate League, catcher Ty Haselman competing in the Coastal Plain League for Lexington, right-handed pitcher Holden Powell playing for Newport in the New England Collegiate Baseball League and right-handed pitcher throwing for Yakima in the West Coast League.

In addition, seven incoming freshman for the 2019 season will also be playing summer ball this season in the West Coast League: Dennis Boatman (Corvallis), Noah Cardenas (Portland), Jack Filby (Walla Walla), Jake Moberg (Yakima), Nick Nastrini (Bellingham), Mikey Perez (Portland) and JT Schwartz (Wenatchee).

Infielder Chase Strumpf was selected to play for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team this summer but will not participate due to an injury. He is expected to make a full recovery and return to UCLA in the fall.
