
UCLA Falls to Minnesota in Regional

MINNEAPOLIS - Daniel Amaral finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Garrett Mitchell drove in three runs as the No. 2 seed UCLA baseball team fell to top-seeded Minnesota, 13-8, on Sunday evening in the NCAA Minneapolis Regional from Siebert Field. The loss was the second to the Golden Gophers of the weekend and eliminates the Bruins from postseason play.
Jackson Rose (5-1) earned the win tossing 4.0 innings out of the bullpen allowing one run on five hits. Nick Scheidler (1-1) suffered the loss allowing three runs on two hits in 1.1 innings in relief.
Offensively, Michael Toglia drove in two runs, while Jack Stronach collected two hits,ย scored twice and tallied an RBI.
UCLA scored a run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly to left field by Toglia, but Minnesota answered with an RBI-double by Terrin Vavra in the bottom half of the frame.
The Bruins scored another run in the second inning on a single to center field by Mitchell but the Golden Gophers hit a three-run home run in the bottom half of the inning to grab a 4-2 lead.
UCLA regained the lead in the third inning with three runs to make the score 5-4. Toglia drove in a run with a single to left field followed by Stronach hitting a ground ball to second base to plate Kevin Kendall and then Amaral dropped in an RBI-single to right field.
Minnesota responded with three runs in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly and a two-run home run, followed by plating six runs in the fourth inning highlighted by Alex Boxwell driving in two with a double down the right-field line for a 13-5 lead.
Amaral drove in his second run of the game in the fifth inning when he hit a single to left field to allow Chase Strumpf to score. Mitchell would make the score 13-8 in the ninth inning with a two-out, two-run double to right field.
The Bruins ended the game with eight runs on 12 hits with no errors, while the Golden Gophers scored 13 runs on 11 hits with one error.
Four Bruins earned Minneapolis All-Regional Team honors as Ryan Garcia, Chase Strumpf, Michael Toglia and Daniel Amaral were each recognized for their performances over the weekend.
UCLA finishes the season with a 38-21 record.
