Men's Tennis Named ITA All-Academic Team

TEMPE, Ariz. -- The UCLA men's tennis team was named a 2018 All-Academic Team for the fourth straight year, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced Tuesday. Seniors Austin Rapp and Martin Redlicki and redshirt freshman Reid Ponder were also honored individually, earning Scholar-Athlete recognition.

Totals of 735 teams and 4,328 student-athletes received praise across men's and women's tennis.

In order to be eligible for the team award, a squad must maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.20 or above, with all varsity letter winners factored in. The individual award takes into account three factors: be a varsity letter winner; have a GPA of at least 3.50 for the current academic year; and have been enrolled at his present school for at least two semesters.

Redlicki's added another honor to a decorated senior season with the fourth ITA Scholar-Athlete award of his career. In addition to being the NCAA doubles champion (with Evan Zhu) and the nation's top-ranked singles player for a majority of the campaign, the Boca Raton, Fla. native also earned a plethora of off-court accolades. Redlicki was named the Pac-12 Men's Tennis Scholar-Athete of the Year, as well as a Tom Hansen Conference Medal recipient, while notching membership in the conference's All-Academic First Team for the second time and third time overall.

Rapp also earned a spot on the Pac-12 All-Academic First Teamโ€”a first for his career after two Honorable Mention nods. A leader on and off the court, the Rancho Mirage, Calif. native was picked as ITA Southwest Region Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award winner. It was a breakout year in doubles play for Rapp, who received an All-America selection after advancing to the semifinal round of the NCAA Doubles Championship with Keegan Smith.

Ponder, who made his UCLA debut in the fall, was named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll for Fall 2017, Winter 2018 and Spring 2018. Each of the three quarters saw the San Diego native finish with a 4.0 GPA.
