LOS ANGELES โ The UCLA women's tennis was honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) with an All-Academic Team Award while a trio of Bruins were named ITA Scholar-Athletes, it was announced on Tuesday morning.
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All varsity letterwinners were factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2017 and spring 2018).
Freshmen Abi Altick and Sophie Bendetti as well as senior Terri Fleming were also honored as ITA Scholar-Athletes, awarded to student-athletes who were varsity letterwinners, had a GPA of 3.50 or higher for the year, and completed at least the equivalent of two semesters of classes at their current school.
The Bruins excelled in both the classroom and on the court in 2018. Led by head coach Stella Sampras Webster, UCLA posted a 23-6 record this year, securing a No. 12 seed in the NCAA Tournament and advancing to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2015. Sophomore Ena Shibahara, sophomore Jada Hart, and Fleming were each named ITA All-Americans at the conclusion of the season.
