UCLA Women's Soccer Takes Control in 3-0 Win at LMU

No. 8 UCLA controlled play in a dominating 3-0 victory at Loyola Marymount on Thursday night. Each of the Bruin goal-scorers, Jessie Fleming, Chloe Castaneda and Kennedy Faulknor, recorded their first goals of the year, and all three goals came off corner kicks.
Fleming, playing for the first time since an abbreviated start at Penn State on Aug. 25, made her presence felt in the first half, scoring her first goal of the year in the 39th minute. Playing off a dummy on an Anika Rodriguez corner kick, Fleming went upper right on a one-time shot for her 18th career goal.
UCLA (4-1-1) doubled its lead in the 55th minute after a Rodriguez corner kick was settled by Mace just outside the box. After an exchange with Delanie Sheehan, Mace one-timed a cross into the front of goal, where Castaneda snuck past her defender to head it past LMU goalkeeper Charlee Pruitt.
Just four minutes later, another corner kick led to UCLA's final goal. Mace again helped set up the play, sending a pass in the box to Faulknor on the right side of the goal. Faulknor one-timed it past Pruitt for her first collegiate goal.
Five Bruins made their collegiate debuts in the second half - junior Maki Umehara; redshirt freshmen Hannah Sharts, Issy Bellinghausen and Dani Satterwhite; and true freshman Olivia de Moraes. Sharts nearly a scored a goal in the 86th minute when Meghan Scudero sent a cross to her in the box, but Pruitt snagged the ball just before Sharts could put a head on it.
"Having some of the rookies and younger players get some time in was great," said UCLA head coach Amanda Cromwell. "They were really celebrated by their teammates that came off. If one of them had scored a goal, I think the explosion off the bench would have been awesome. The camaraderie on this team is good, and everyone is very supportive of each other."
The Bruins outshot the Lions 21-3 and held LMU (2-5-2) without a shot in the first half. UCLA goalkeeper Lauren Brzykcy earned her first career solo shutout.
UCLA will next face San Diego State on Sunday at 6pm in San Diego in the final non-conference game of the season.
