
No. 2 UCLA Earns Two More Victories

The Bruins were led by freshman Jake Cavanoย who scored a total of nine goals in the two games today, including four against LMU. Redshirt junior Raphael Raedeย had a hat trick and senior Austin Rone picked up two scores on two shots for the Bruins. Redshirtย junior Alex Wolf got the start in the cage and shut out the Lions while making five saves.ย Freshman Danny Roland played the second and third quarters in goal and was credited with four saves while allowing five goals. Redshirt junior Jonathan Van De Veldeย played the fourth period in the cage and registered two saves while surrendering three scores.
UCLA won the first period 3-0. Sophomore Evan Rosenfeldย (7:33) and Cavanoย (3:20) scored goals from the front court while rone scored his first of the game off a rebound shot from the front court (1:43).
After LMU cut it to 3-1 with a goal to open the scoring in the second quarter (6:31), the Bruins reeled off five straight goals. Cavano scored his second on a power play (3:18) to push the lead to 4-1. Rone then scored his second from the front court (1:08) to give the Bruins a 5-1 lead at the break.
The third quarter was all offense as the Bruins outscored the Lions 6-4 in the period. Raedeย scored back-to-back goals (5:45 - two meters; 5:20 - counter) to extend the lead to 7-1. Freshman Ashworth Molthenย scored his only goal of the game from the front court (4:27) to make it 8-1. After a goal from the Lions, Cavanoย completed his hat trick with a power play goal (3:41) and sophomore Quinten Osborne added a goal from two meters (2:56) to put the Bruins up 10-2. LMU would get back-to-back power play goals (2:14 and 1:22), but Cavanoย notched his fourth of the game on a shot from the front court (1:06) to make it 11-4. Blazo Mitrovicย completed his hat trick for LMU from the front court (0:07) to end the scoring in the third with UCLA leading 11-5.
Both teams scored three goals in the final period. The Bruins got a goal from redshirtย sophomore Peter Lovas after an ordinary foul (6:30) to open the scoring in the fourth. Redshirtย junior Eric Goldenbergย scored from the front court (4:10) and Raedeย completed his hat trick with a score from two meters (3:44) to make it 14-6 UCLA. The Lions got two power play goals from Alexandros Athymaritisย (2:59 and 0:15) to provide the 14-8 final.

No. 2 UCLA improved to 10-0 on the year with a 16-8 win over No. 10 Pepperdineย (6-3) in the first game of the tripleheader on Saturday afternoon at Dirks Pool at Spiekerย Aquatics Center. The Bruins improved to 79-31-1 while Pepperdineย fell to 6-3 on the year.
The Bruins were led by freshman Jake Cavanoย with a season-high for UCLA withย five goalsย in just his second game as a Bruin after missing the first eight contests with an undisclosed injury. Freshman Danny Roland got the start and played the first three quarters tallying seven saves while allowing six scores. Redshirtย junior Jonathan Van De Velde played the fourth quarter, making two stops and surrendering four goals.
UCLA exploded right out of the game against the Waves leading 7-3 at the end of the first period. Cavano kicked things off with a strike from the front court (7:37) and sophomore Nicolas Saveljicย followed with a score from the front court as well (6:13) to put UCLA up 2-0. After Pepperdineย scored on a power play, the Bruins answered with three straight goals to build a 5-1 lead. Sophomore Luke Henrikssonย (4:47) scored from the front court, Saveljicย (3:41) scored his second of the game on a power play and Cavanoย (3:14) netted his second from the front court. Sophomore Quinten Osborne scored on a penalty shot (1:53) to put the Bruins up 6-2. Sophomore Felix Brozyna-Vilim (0:47) ended the scoring in the first with a goal at set.
Another dominant period followed for UCLA, which won the second quarter 5-1. Brozyna-Vilim scored his second from two meters (7:41) and freshman Ashworth Molthenย scored on a counter (6:58) to make it 9-3 UCLA. After a penalty conversion by Pepperdine (6:45), UCLA ended the quarter with three straight scores. Cavanoย completed his hat trick with a power play goal (5:16) and Saveljicย followed with a hat trick on a power play (3:20). The Bruins took a 12-4 lead into the break with a goal from the front court by sophomore Evan Rosenfeld (2:27).
A low-scoring third quarter followed as the Bruins scored first to lead 13-4 when Osborne scored his second of the game from set (6:27). but Pepperdineย scored twice from the front court (6:10 and 0:24) to trim the lead to 13-6 heading into the fourth.
The Waves won the fourth quarter, 4-3 and the second half, 6-4. After back-to-back goals (7:12 and 5:42) by the Waves cut the lead to 13-8, the Bruins put their top line back in and immediately scored (5:11) as Saveljic drew an exclusion and Cavanoย added his fourth goal of the game on the 6-on-5 opportunity. Cavano would later score his fifth of the game on another power play (3:30) to put UCLA up 15-9. Freshman Matthew Kacuraย scored his first of the game on a power play as well (1:22) to put the Bruins up 16-9. Pepperdine's Chris Dilworth ended the scoring on a drive and finish (0:59) to provide the 16-10 final.
