ANAHEIM - Bruins Kirk Kilgour, Dave Saunders and Rudy Suwara, have been chosen for induction into the Southern California Indoor Volleyball Hall of Fame, joining women's inductees Jeanne Beauprey Reeves and Denise Corlett. In addition, Sharkie Zartman will be receiving the SCIVBHOF Lifetime Service Award. The ceremony will take place on May 5 at the Highway 39 Event Center in Anaheim.
Kilgour was a member of Al Scates' first two NCAA championship teams in 1970 and 1971. A three-time All-American (USVBA and NCAA), his Bruin teams posted an 80-5 record. He was named the 1971 co-Most Outstanding Player at the NCAA Tournament. Following college, he played several years on the U.S. National Team and in professional leagues abroad. Kilgour went on to become a coach at Pepperdine, winning the national title in 1985. He also worked as a volleyball announcer for all the major networks' coverage of Olympic volleyball.
Saunders was a member of three NCAA championship teams while at UCLA (1979, 1981, 1982). The 1979 squad posted the first undefeated record (31-0) in men's volleyball history. Saunders was a starter on the 1981 and 1982 title teams and was named an All-American, NCAA All-Tournament selection and first-team all-conference pick following the '82 season. He went on to win two Olympic Gold medals as a member of the U.S. Men's National Team in 1984 at Los Angeles and in 1988 at the Seoul Games.
Suwara was an assistant coach on UCLA's first NCAA championship team in 1970. He was a highly decorated player in the USVBA ranks during the 1960's and 1970's. Suwara competed in the FIVB World Championships in 1966 and 1970. He went on the earn a Gold medal in the 1967 Pan Am Games and was a member of the U.S. National Team in the 1968 Olympic Games. Suwara coached the men's team at UC Santa Barbara (1971-74) and was the women's coach at San Diego State from 1976 to 1991.
