LOUISVILLE - National Champion Rachel Garcia has been named the 2019 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division I National Pitcher of the Year, as announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association on Thursday.
Garcia, who was named the Schutt Sports/NFCA DI National Player of the Year in 2018, earns the inaugural NFCA DI Pitcher of the Year award, as voted on by members of the NFCA's NCAA DI All-American Committee.
Garcia was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Women's College World Series after going 5-0 in Oklahoma City with a 1.75 earned run average and 33 strikeouts in 36 innings. She went the distance four times at the WCWS, including a 10-inning, 16-strikeout performance against Washington last Sunday, capping the game off on the offensive end with a walk-off, three-run homer to propel the Bruins into the WCWS Championship Series. Garcia led all WCWS pitchers in wins and was second in strikeouts.
In the entire NCAA Tournament, Garcia was 9-0 in the circle with a 1.49 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 65 2/3 innings. On the season, the redshirt junior was 29-1 with a 1.14 ERA and 286 strikeouts in 202 innings. Garcia went the distance in 19 of her 25 starts, tossing seven solo shutouts. In 36 appearances, she limited opponents to a .162 batting average, saving four games.
The USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year for the second season in a row, Garcia was the first player in Pac-12 history to be named conference Player and Pitcher of the Year in the same season. Garcia was also named a finalist for the Honda Sport Award for softball for the second consecutive year. She was named NFCA All-West Region First Team, All-Pac-12 First Team, Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week four times and NFCA National Player, USA Softball National Player and Pac-12 Player of the Week once each.
