EKATERINBURG, Russia – UCLA's Michaela Onyenwere began play at the FIBA 3x3 Women's Series on Tuesday afternoon in Ekaterinburg, Russia, and the sophomore standout helped her USA squad to a 15-11 win over Romania in Pool A of the tournament.
Sporting No. 10 for USA, Onyenwere scored a team-high nine points and also pulled down seven boards. She went 2-for-3 from the charity stripe. In 3x3 play, regular two-pointers count as one point, while 3-pointers count as two points. Her teammates, Aleah Goodman (Oregon State) and Bella Alarie (Princeton), added three points apiece. The new Women's Series sees teams representing their national federation, and 8-12 events are expected to take place this year. There are more than eight teams participating at the Women's Series, meaning that the teams are different at each event. They qualify for individual stops based on the number of events they have already been allocated to and their team ranking.
