
Wilson, UCLA Issue Strong 2019 Debut at NAU Friday Night Duals

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. โ The UCLA throwers made a statement in the 2019 season opener at the NAU Friday Night Duals, highlighted by sophomore Alyssa Wilson's lifetime-best efforts in both the shot put and weight throw, as well as a first-place finish by senior Justin Stafford in the weight throw. ย
On her final throw of the shot put, Wilson mustered a lifetime-best mark of 17.73m (58-2), propelling her to a first-place finish. The tally ranks second all-time in UCLA indoor track & field history and currently sits first in the NCAA.
Later in the night, Wilson bested her old PR in the weight throw by over five feet, heaving 20.51m (67-3.5) to notch another first-place finish.
In the men's weight throw, Stafford postedย an effort of 19.98m (65-6.75) on his final attempt, just short of his all-time indoor best of 19.99m (65-7).ย
The men's shot put kicked off the meet for UCLA, and the event saw senior Dotun Ogundeji (19.00m; 62-4), redshirt freshman Jacob Wilson (18.12m; 59-5.5) and junior Nate Esparza (17.85m; 58-6.75) go 2-3-4. Arizona sophomore Jordan Geist, who set the NCAA freshman record in the shot put a year ago, took first in the event with a heave of 20.27m (66-6).
Senior Ashlie Blake also competed for the Bruins, earning a third-place finish in the shot put with a mark of 16.51m (54-2).
Wilson went third in the men's weight throw, posting 18.41m (60-5).ย
