UCLA Comes Up Short to USC, 72-67

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA women's basketball team turned an 11-point second half deficit into a one-possession game down the stretch, but the Bruins couldn't get over the hump, falling 72-67 to the Women of Troy on Sunday evening at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom.
 
For the sixth time this season, sophomore Michaela Onyenwere registered a double-double, tallying 22 points and 12 rebounds. Redshirt freshman Lindsey Corsaro tied a career high with 15 points, going 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, while senior Kennedy Burke had an all-around game with 14 points, seven rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals.
 
Senior Japreece Dean dished out a career-high eight assists, and senior Lajahna Drummer pulled down 10 rebounds.
 
UCLA shot 50 percent in the second half but couldn't overcome 17 turnovers, which turned into 24 points for USC.
 
The Storyline
After falling behind 7-2 early, UCLA mustered a 5-0 run to knot the affair, getting a 3-pointer from Burke and layup from Onyenwere. UCLA fell cold, however, hitting just one field goal in the final 4:59, allowing the Women of Troy to take a 19-12 lead into the second frame.
 
The Bruins caught fire in the second quarter, hitting 3-of-4 field goals to knot the game at 19 apiece. The trio of Burke, Corsaro and Onyenwere combined for UCLA's 18 second-quarter points, as the Bruins outscored USC by five in the stanza to pull within two (32-30) at halftime.
 
Despite getting a game-tying basket from Onyenwere on its first possession, UCLA saw USC respond with a 10-2 run to stretch the Women of Troy's advantage to 42-34. The Bruins got within six twice in the quarter, but USC continued to have the answer.
 
Trailing 55-44 in the fourth, Onyenwere buried a 3-pointer to spark an 8-1 run, pulling UCLA to within four (56-52). On the Bruins' next possession, Onyenwere grabbed the miss and notched the and-one to cut it to three (58-55).
 
Four straight by USC pushed the deficit back to seven (62-55) until Corsaro rattled home a 3-pointer and Onyenwere nailed two at the stripe to make it a two-point contest.
 
The Women of Troy scored six of the next nine, extending their lead to 68-63 with 23 seconds left, and the Bruins ran out of time down the stretch.
