No. 2 UCLA Posts Dominant Win Over No. 5 UCSB, 15-11

UCLA was led by a trio of Bruins who all had hat tricks. Freshman Jack White, sophomore Ashworth Molthen and junior Felix Brozyna-Vilim each scored three goals for a combined total of nine goals on 11 shots.ย Redshirt senior Alex Wolf got the start in the cage and recorded 11 saves while allowing nine goals before being relieved in the fourth quarter. Freshman Bernardo Maurizi played the final 4:04 of the game, tallying one save while surrendering two scores.
The Bruins scored the first two goals of the game and never looked back. Freshman Tommy Gruwell got the Bruins on the board with a penalty conversion (6:59) followed by a powerful goal at set from Brozyna-Vilim (6:08). After a goal by Cole Brosnan (5:49), junior Chasen Travisano scored from the front court (3:27) and freshman Andy Rodgers scored on a power play (1:39) to put the Bruins up 4-1. Leo Yuno scored on a power play (1:09) to end the scoring in the first with the Bruins leading 4-2.
UCLA scored the first four goals of the second period and the rout was on. Brozyna-Vilimย scored his second from two meters (6:21) and freshman Gabe Discipulo followed suit with his first of the game from two meters (4:45) to push the lead to 6-2. White netted his first from the front court (4:04) and Brozyna-Vilimย completed his hat trick with a nice catch, turn, and finish (2:14) to extend the lead to 8-2 at the break.
Jacob Halle scored the first two goals of the third period (7:39 and 6:54) to trim the Gauchos' deficit to 8-4. But UCLA reeled off three straight goals to enjoy its largest lead of the game at 11-4. Molthen scored his first on a power play (3:28), followed by a second goal from the front court on a strike by White (2:38) and then a second goal from Rodgers on a power play (1:38). UCSB scored the final two goals of the period to pull to within 11-6 heading into the fourth.
As the Bruins looked to run out the clock in the final three minutes of the game, the two teams traded goals in the fourth quarter. Molthen scored his second on a penalty shot (7:26) and Gruwell scored his second from the front court (6:20) as UCLA led 13-7. Molthen completed his hat trick with a score from the front court (4:56) and White did the same with his third score from the front court, beating the shot clock with 3:37 remaining and UCLA leading 15-9. Nathan Puentesย netted a power play score (1:36) and Ryan Brosnan scored from the front court (1:19) for UCSB to provide the 15-11 final.
UCLA returns to action next Friday, Oct. 18 at 7:00 p.m. PT when they host No. 3 Pacific at Spieker Aquatics Center. The game is the seventh of nine straight home dates for UCLA.
