SALT LAKE CITY - Junior Mac May led the Bruins with 13 kills and two aces, while senior Savvy Simoย added 12 digs and eight kills, but UCLA dropped a three-setter at No. 18 Utah on Friday at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. Set scores were 25-17, 25-16, 28-26.

Sophomore Kelli Barry posted six digs, junior Jenny Mosser and redshirt freshman Lexi Hadrych each had five kills, redshirt freshman Tristin Savage added four blocks and sophomore Devon Chang had 12 assists and six digs. The Bruins hit .156 for the match.

Despite six ties in the opening set, the Bruins only lead was at 7-6, as Utah responded with 11 of the next 13 to go up by a set-best eight at 17-9. The Utes won the first set by that same margin, 25-17. Simo was error-free in the set with six kills in nine attempts to go with three digs. The Bruins were out-hit, .370 to .088.

Set two had seven ties, with the Bruins holding leads at 8-7 and 9-8. But the advantages would be short-lived, as Utah scored 13 of the next 17 to go up 21-13, eventually winning the second by a tally of 25-16. May produced five kills in the second and Barry had three digs, as the Bruins were out-hit, .344 to .067.

The largest lead of set three for UCLA was a pair at 6-4. Trailing 4-2, kills by Chang and Hadrych, an ace from freshman Mari Hinkle and a Utah attack error put the Bruins up by two. The Utes rallied back to take a set-best, three-point lead at 14-11. Still trailing by three at 16-13, four in a row for UCLA on two May aces and a kill and a Ute error put the Bruins back on top. Set three featured 19 ties and nine lead changes. Utah earned a match point at 24-23, but kills by May and Savage gave the Bruins a set point. The Utes scored the next two to pick up a second match point, but a Simo kill saved it. However, Utah scored the next two points to win the third, 28-26. May had seven kills in the third, while Hadrych added three. Simo posted nine digs and Chang had five. The Bruins were out-hit, .333 to .267.

The Bruins are back in action on Sunday at Colorado at 1 p.m. PT/2 p.m. MT. The match will air on ESPN2.
