Bruins Win Third Straight, Knock Off No. 15 Cal in Four

LOS ANGELES - Junior Mac May led all players with 21 kills to go with nine digs, while sophomore Kelli Barry notched her first double-double as a Bruin with 17 digs and 10 assists, as UCLA defeated No. 15 California in four sets on Sunday at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. Set scores were 25-19, 25-20, 25-27, 25-20.
The Bruins improved to 12-7 overall and 7-3 in Pac-12 play, while the Golden Bears fell to 17-3 and 7-3 in league action.
May was one of four Bruins in double figures in kills, as redshirt sophomore Emily Ryan had 11 with a .500 hitting percentage to go with five blocks and junior Jenny Mosser and redshirt freshman Lexi Hadrych both posted 10. The Bruin setting duo of senior Cali Thompson (27 assists) and sophomore Devon Chang (20 assists, eight digs) helped their team to a .300 hitting percentage. Senior Savvy Simo added nine digs, eight kills and two aces and redshirt sophomore Sabrina Smith recorded a career-best seven blocks.ย
The Bruins led wire-to-wire in set one, scoring the first five points of the match on three consecutive May kills, one by Mosser and a Ryan/Mosser block. Ahead 10-6, Hadrych and May kills and a Mosser/Ryan block put the lead at 13-7. UCLA's largest advantage of the opening set was nine at 23-14 and 24-15. On the Bruins' fifth set point, a Simo kill closed out a 25-19 victory. May was 6-for-13 with no errors in the opening stanza, Ryan added five kills and no miscues in seven swings and Simoย was 4-for-6 with no errors and four digs. Barry notched five digs, Mosser had three kills and Chang tallied three digs. The Bruins hit .541 with 21 kills and only one error in 37 attempts to Cal's .297 percentage.
UCLA trailed twice by one in set two at 2-1 and 4-3, as two Cal errors and a Chang ace made it 6-4 Bruins, who held the lead for the rest of the set. The teams were trading sideouts during the middle of the set before the Bruins finally expanded their lead to as much as eight at 22-14 and 23-15. Up 19-14, a Ryan kill and solo block and a May ace brought the lead to 22-14. An attack error on the Bruins' second set point gave them a 25-20 win. Ryan had four kills in the second, Mosser was 3-for-6 with no errors and Barry added four digs, as the Bruins were out-hit, .233 to .212.
The Bruins led throughout all of set three until the very end when California forced a fourth set. UCLA led by as much as five thanks to an 8-3 outburst to start the set, as the Bruins had a Simo/Hadrych/Smith triple block and a Hadrych/Smith combo roof, two Simo kills and kills from May and Hadrych. Cal would end up tying the score at 16, but UCLA still maintained the advantage, holding as late as a 24-22 lead. But Cal scored five of the next six to win the third, 27-25. May had seven kills and six digs in the third, Hadrych added four kills, Barry posted four digs and Mosser and Simo each had three kills. The Bruins were out-hit, .366 to .261.
Cal still had the momentum and took an early 4-1 lead in set four, but it would be short-lived, as the Bruins scored 10 of the next 12 to take the lead for good. Down 5-3, kills by Mosser and Smith and a Simo/Smith block put the Bruins up 6-5. After a sideout, kills from Chang, May, Hadrych and May again, as well as a Simo ace made it 11-6. Leading 18-16, five in a row on a Hadrych kill, a Simo ace, blocks from Hadrych and Smith and then May and Smith and a May kill gave the Bruins a set-best lead of six at 23-16. After four in a row by Cal, a Hadrych kill and a Ryan solo stuff finished up the 25-20 win. May had six kills in the fourth, Hadrych added three, Smith posted four blocks and Barry had four digs. The Bruins out-hit the Golden Bears, .176 to .071.
The Bruins are on the road next weekend, first taking on No. 24 Washington State in Pullman on Friday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. The match will air on Pac-12 Network.
