LOS ANGELES – It's a first for the New York Knicks organization. Lisa Willis has been named an assistant coach for the franchise's G League team – the Westchester Knicks.
Willis played for UCLA from 2002-06 and accumulated 1,677 points during her career, ranking 13th in program history. She ranks second in Bruin history in career steals (372) and sits tied for first with Kari Korver for career 3-point field goals made (256).
A two-time first-team all-conference selection, Willis was ultimately selected as the fifth overall pick in the 2006 WNBA Draft by the Los Angeles Sparks. She played a total of four seasons in the league, two of which took place in New York for the Liberty. Her best season came in 2008, when she played in 34 games for New York and averaged 5.6 PPG and 1.7 RPG.
Willis is one of a growing number of women who have notched coaching jobs in the NBA. That list includes former WNBA stars, Becky Hammon and Kristi Toliver, who are assistant coaches for the San Antonio Spurs and Washington Wizards, respectively.
The W-Knicks open their season on Nov. 9 against the Raptors 905.
