Dribble for the Cure Returns to Campus Oct. 13

October 03, 2019 | Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball, Bruin Athletics

LOS ANGELES โ€“ The 12th annual Dribble for the Cure, scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 13 on the UCLA campus, will give participants the opportunity to interact with Bruin student-athletes while furthering the fight to eliminate childhood cancer. Led by its basketball teams, UCLA Athletics is teaming with the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation (PCRF), the Cancer Research Program at Mattel Children's Hospital and Champion Sponsor SEIA for a morning of inspirational stories, giveaways and festivities.

SIGN UP NOW for Dribble for the Cure. Participants can register individually, form or join a team of 10 or more or simply donate to the cause. Costs are $25 for adults and $15 for children 12 years old and younger. Group rates are also available. Prizes ranging from a 2019 Dribble for the Cure basketball ($150) to a custom monogrammed UCLA basketball jersey ($1,500) will be available to the highest fundraisers.

Dribble for the Cure has raised an estimated $1.6 million since UCLA Athletic Hall of Famer John Vallely introduced the event in 2008. Vallely and his wife, Karen, lost their 12-year-old daughter, Erin, to pediatric cancer in 1992.

"All these dollars are going to children's cancer research, which will improve the quality of life and care for these kids," said Vallely. "When you leave this event, you'll feel like I do every yearโ€”on top of the world because you've made a difference in kids' lives around the world."

The event begins from Drake Stadium at 8:30 a.m. with day-of registration and the Dribble for the Cure Festival, which will feature appearances by student-athletes from across campus, the UCLA Band and the UCLA Spirit Squad with mascots Joe and Josie Bruin, as well as activities and giveaways. Commemorative t-shirts and goodie bags will be available for all Dribblers. Michael Price Family UCLA Head Basketball Coaches Cori Close and Mick Cronin and their teams will also make their first appearance during the festival to welcome participants, pose for photos and sign autographs.

At 10:15 a.m., Dribblers will set course with the Bruin basketball teams for Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. Approximately one mile in distance, the route will culminate on Nell and John Wooden Court, where participants will be able to shoot baskets with their favorite players before the awards ceremony starts at 11:15 a.m., when top supporters and the eight team captains will be honored. The morning will conclude with more autographs from the teams.
