Bruins Sweep No. 24 Washington State

LOS ANGELES - Three Bruins had double figures in kills, while three posted double figures in digs, as senior Savvy Simo and junior Mac May were in both categories in the Bruins' sweep of No. 24 Washington State on Friday at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. Set scores were 25-20, 25-17, 25-18.
The Bruins (8-4) improved to 3-0 in Pac-12 play, the last undefeated team in the conference. It is the first time since 2007 that UCLA has opened league action with three wins in a row. Washington State falls to 12-3 overall and 1-2 in Pac-12 play.
Simo recorded 13 kills and 14 digs for her fourth double-double of the season, while May had 10 kills and 12 digs for her fourth double-double. Junior Jenny Mosser led all players with 14 kills, adding six digs and three blocks. Sophomore Kelli Barry posted 17 digs, redshirt freshman Lexi Hadrych notched four kills and redshirt sophomore Emily Ryan added five blocks, four digs and three kills. The Bruin setting duo of senior Cali Thompson (26 assists, seven digs) and sophomore Devon Chang (10 assists, five digs) set the Bruins to a .211 hitting percentage.
The first set featured nine ties and three lead changes. Washington State scored the first four points of the match, but UCLA responded with a 10-4 run to go up by a pair. Mosser notched five kills during the run, May added two, Hadrych tallied one and WSU committed a pair of errors. The Cougars would re-take the lead, but only by one, the latest at 16-15. The Bruins came back with the next five points on three Simo kills and a Mosser kill and ace to go ahead by four at 20-16. With five set points, the Bruins won the opener on their second try on a May kill to wrap up a 25-20 win. Mosser recorded seven kills in the first, May added five and Simo was 4-for-10 with no errors. Barry had five digs. The Bruins out-hit the Cougars, .250 to .242.
The only tie in the second set came after the first two points. The Bruins scored seven of the next eight on two kills each by Mosser and Simo, a May ace and two Cougar errors. UCLA's lead stayed at three or above for the rest of the set. At 22-17, the Bruins scored the last three of the set on a Hadrych kill, a WSU attack error and a block by Mosser and Ryan to win it 25-17. Simo posted five kills and six digs in the second, Mosser added four kills and four digs, Barry tallied seven digs and May had four digs. The Bruins out-hit the Cougars, .204 to .043.
