Iloski Scores School-Record Five Goals in 5-2 Win

LOS ANGELES – Junior forward Milan Iloski scored a school-record five goals to lead UCLA to a 5-2 win over visiting San Diego State on Sunday night at Wallis Annenberg Stadium.
The Escondido, Calif. native, who entered the game top-five in the nation in goal-scoring, potted a pair of goals in the first half to put the Bruins (5-4-1, 1-2 Pac-12) up 2-1 after the opening 45 minutes.
Iloski would go on to collect another three goals in the second half, all coming in within a 12-minute span. His final two scores of the night occurred just over two minutes apart.
His five-goal night put him alone atop the UCLA record book in single-game goalscoring. He also equaled the program standard for single-game points with 10 (Seth George – Nov. 10, 1996) and became just the fourth Bruin since 1990 (last: Matt Taylor, 2003) to record two hat tricks in a single season.
"If the team plays well behind Milan, he's going to find pockets to pick the ball up and in those moments he'll do the job on the front end of the team," said UCLA head coach Ryan Jorden. "It's a bit of a statement about how the team played tonight and obviously a bit of his qualities to do the final piece."
The offensive outburst from Iloski helped the Bruins overcome an early deficit, as SDSU (3-5-1, 0-3) got on the board in just the second minute.
Iloski leveled the game for the Bruins in the 27th minute. Freshman midfielder Riley Ferch started the play off by playing a sharp ball from the center line to a streaking Iloski, who got a perfect touch on the pass while splitting SDSU's center backs to set up a breakaway. He would go on to round the keeper before finishing with a left-footed shot into the empty net.
Ferch and Iloski hooked up again just before the end of the first half to give UCLA the lead for good. The play developed quickly, as the Bruins swiftly moved into attack mode after picking off a goal kick in midfield. The ball made its way to Ferch on the right side, who swung in a cross as he reached the 18 to Iloski who was near the penalty spot. Iloski got his left foot on it and volleyed it into the left side of the net to collect a brace.
Milan would go on to notch the eventual game-winning goal in the 65th minute after sophomore midfielder Cody Sundquist earned a free kick just above the top of the 18. Standing over the ball, Milan played a short pass to his brother Eric, who was standing just a few feet away. Eric teed the ball back up for Milan who drilled a right-footed shot into the upper-right corner from about 20 yards out.
His historic night continued in the 74th minute with a penalty kick conversion that made him the first Bruin since 1997 (Martin Bruno) to reach four goals in a game. Iloski himself earned the PK after beating a defender to a ball in the box and then getting dragged down.
Less than three minutes later he etched his name into Bruin lore. After some nice build-up, senior midfielder Matt Powell found Iloski between the two center backs just above the 18. Spinning around while receiving the ball, Iloski got both the final SDSU defender and the keeper to bite on a fake right-footed shot before putting the ball back onto his left and draining the open chance.
After his Sunday exploits, Iloski has 14 goals on the campaign in just 10 games. He has the most single-season scores by a Bruin since Chandler Hoffman's 18 in 2011.
The Bruins, who are in the midst of an eight-game homestand, host a pair of Pac-12 rivals this week. First they welcome Stanford on Thursday night at 8:00 p.m. before taking on Cal at 4:00 on Sunday afternoon.
