Pereira, Rapp Seize Doubles Title in San Diego

SAN DIEGO โ Four members of the UCLA men's tennis team concluded play at the Aztec Fall Invitational Sunday, with the A-Flight doubles final decided in an all-Bruin affair.
An extra year of experience won out in the title match, as juniors Bryce Pereira and Connor Rapp defeated sophomores Eric Hahn and Max Wild, 6-1. Hahn and Wild, meanwhile, posted third-place finishes in their respective singles draws. Play began Friday from the Aztec Tennis Center.
As part of the Aztec singles flight, Hahn and Rapp posted hard-fought wins in the first round. Hahn and UC San Diego's Cody Duong split sets before the Bruin took over down the stretch for a 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-2 victory. Rapp edged Jakub Novak of Grand Canyon 7-5 in a first-set tiebreaker before registering a 6-2 second. Rapp fell in the quarterfinals versus David Hough of San Diego State, 7-5, 6-2, but Hahn would carry on. The Fullerton, Calif. native bounced Mark Peneff of UC Irvine next, posting a 6-3, 6-2 decision to earn a spot in the final four. His run would end there, as San Diego's Nico Borter proved too strong, 6-1, 6-3, on the way to the title. Hahn would get a chance for one more win, though, which he would take by a 6-1, 6-1 margin against Hough in the third-place match.
The Warrior Flight saw Wild open play by recovering from a lost first-set tiebreaker in a major way. The Murrieta, Calif. native dropped a 7-3 decider to GCU's Julian Mueller in the opening frame before losing just one game the rest of the way. Next up was Arizona's Hiroki Sakagawa in the quarterfinals, where Wild delivered his Pac-12 foe a 6-3, 7-6(4) loss. Wild came up short against Sacchitt Sharma of San Diego, 6-3, 6-3, but ultimately claimed third place in the flight. Pereira, who dropped his first-round match to UCI's Aaron Bailey by a 6-3, 7-5 score, did not let the loss phase him. Pereira dominated Can Franke of GCU, 6-3, 6-1, before edging Mueller, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0(3), in the consolation bracket.
Pereira and Rapp doubled up Gauchos Peneff and Matthew Sah in the first round of the A-Flight doubles tournament, while Hahn and Wild took care of Arizona's Sakagawa and Conner Olsen by a 6-4 margin. In the quarterfinals, Pereira and Rapp blanked Lucas Moreno and Alex Rushin of Loyola Marymount and Hahn and Wild squeezed past Franke and Leo Andreolli of GCU, 7-5. The pairs posted identical 6-3 wins in the semifinals, with Pereira and Rapp beating Novak and Valentin Lang of GCU and Hahn and Wild fending off Daniel Gealer and Jeremy Merville of UCI. It was all Pereira and Rapp in the final, as the veterans took six of seven games.
