PULLMAN, Wash. -ย Junior Mac May led the 25th-ranked Bruins with 20 kills to go with eight digs, while senior Savvy Simo added 20 digs and six kills, as UCLA swept No. 22 Washington State on Friday at Bohler Gym. Set scores were 27-25, 25-17, 25-22.
ย
The Bruins improved to 13-7 overall and 8-3 in Pac-12 play, winning their fourth in a row, while the Cougars fell to 18-5 and 7-4 in league action.
ย
Redshirt freshman Lexi Hadrych had 12 kills and sophomore Kelli Barry posted 12 digs. Senior Cali Thompson notched 24 assists and three digs, while sophomore Devon Chang had 20 assists and five digs, as the duo set the Bruins to a .293 hitting percentage. Junior Jenny Mosser registered eight kills and redshirt sophomore Emily Ryan had five kills.
ย
The opening set featured nine ties, as the Bruins led throughout, until at 19-18 UCLA, Washington State scored six of nine to earn two set points at 24-22. May recorded kills on both attempts to tie things at 24, and a kill by Ryan gave the Bruins a set point. The Cougars evened the score at 25, but a May kill and a WSU attack error made it a 27-25 UCLA victory in the first set. May had eight kills and three digs in the opener, Simo added 10 digs and three kills, Barry had six digs and Hadrych posted four kills. Chang added 11 assists and three digs, while Mosser and Ryan both notched three kills. Both teams hit .200 in the first set.
ย
The Bruins led from start to finish in set two, scoring five of the first six points, with four of them coming from May on three kills and an ace. Up 9-8, the Bruins scored five in a row on two May kills, one apiece from Hadrych and Ryan and a WSU attack error to make it 14-8. At 17-13, Hadrych and May kills, a Simo ace and a Cougar attack error gave the Bruins a set-best lead of eight at 21-13. Eight would be the final margin when a Barry pass was lofted over the net and untouched for a kill and a 25-17 win. May improved on her eight kills from the first set with nine in the second on no errors in 13 attempts, with Hadrych adding six kills. Simo produced six digs. The Bruins out-hit the Cougars, .433 to .286.
ย
The largest deficit for the Bruins in the third was only two. Even at five, six of seven for UCLA on two May kills, a Hadrych kill and three WSU errors gave the visitors a 11-6 edge. Up 15-10, a Mosser kill and a block by Hadrych and redshirt sophomore Sabrina Smith brought the Bruins' lead to a set-best seven. The closest the Cougars would get the rest of the way was two, as a WSU attack error on UCLA's third match point finished off a 25-22 win. Mosser paced the Bruins with five kills and no errors in seven swings, while May added three kills with three digs. Simo posted four digs and three kills and Barry had four digs. The Bruins out-hit the Cougars, .323 to .135.
