UCLA Signs Chae Campbell to National Letter of Intent
November 14, 2019 | Gymnastics
Chris Waller has officially signed his first recruit as head coach of the UCLA Gymnastics team, inking Carrollton, Texas gymnast Chae Campbell in the early signing period.
Campbell, the 2016 USA Junior National champion on vault, was the all-around bronze medalist and floor exercise silver medalist at the 2019 JO National Championships. The year prior, she won silver on vault and placed in the Top 10 in the all-around and on floor. Campbell won the vault and floor titles at the 2015 JO National Championships while placing third in the all-around. Also that year, she placed first on floor, fourth on bars and fifth in the all-around in the junior division at the Nastia Liukin Cup. Campbell is expected to contribute on all four events at UCLA, with her strongest being the leg events.
"I am extremely happy to have Chae join the team," said Waller. "Chae is an independent thinker and self-assured. She brings a fun and light demeanor but with a fierce competitiveness that you might not expect. She has great character and will prove to be a great teammate and friend to her new Bruin family."
Campbell, who trains at Metroplex Gymnastics, is the third member of the 2021 freshman class to sign national letters of intent. Jordan Chiles and Frida Esparza signed a year ago but deferred enrollment while pursuing an Olympic berth this year.
