Bruins Fall in Three at No. 4 Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. - Redshirt freshman Lexi Hadrych recorded a team-best 12 kills, while junior Mac May added nine kills, nine digs and four blocks, but the Bruins fell in three at No. 4 Stanford on Sunday at Maples Pavilion. Set scores were 25-18, 25-18, 25-20.
Redshirt sophomore Emily Ryan notched nine kills and senior Savvy Simo had seven kills and five digs. The Bruins (14-11, 9-7 Pac-12) hit .200. Senior Cali Thompson had 19 assists and three digs, while sophomore Devon Chang tallied 18 assists and five digs.
The Bruins scored four of the first five points on two Simo kills and one each by Ryan and junior Jenny Mosser. UCLA still led at 5-4 before Stanford scored the next five to go ahead 9-5. Trailing 13-9, the Bruins got three in a row on two Ryan kills sandwiched between a May ace to get back to within one at 13-12, but UCLA would get no closer. Stanford's largest lead was seven, which was also the final margin of the opening set in a 25-18 win. Ryan recorded five kills in the opener, Simo added three kills and three digs and Hadrych posted three kills. May notched five digs and two kills and Chang tallied three digs. The Bruins were out-hit, .343 to .159.
UCLA's lone lead in set two was at 2-1. Stanford's largest lead of the set was eight, as the Cardinal won it by a score of 25-18. Despite only having a one-point edge, the Bruins hit .565 with 15 kills and two errors in 23 attempts. Hadrych and May both posted four kills, while Simo added three.
The Bruins had two-point leads of 2-0, 3-1 and 4-2 in set three, but Stanford (20-4, 14-2 Pac-12) scored the next five and held the lead for the rest of the match. Seven would be the Cardinal's largest lead of the set. At 13-6, the Bruins trimmed their deficit to four on a Hadrych kill, a block from May and redshirt freshman Tristin Savage, a Stanford attack error and a May solo stuff. Still down 24-17, the Bruins saved three match points on a May kill and two May solo blocks, but Stanford would record the 25-20 victory. Hadrych led the Bruins with five kills, while May added three with four blocks and three digs. The Bruins were out-hit, .194 to .026.
The Bruins return to the court on Friday at the John Wooden Center, taking on Oregon at 6 p.m. The match will air on Pac-12 Network Los Angeles.
