UCLA head softball coach Kelly Inouye-Perez has announced a four-player signing class, as Carson Armijo (Murphy, Texas/Plano East Senior HS/Impact Gold – Middlebrook), Courtney Beaudin (Pleasanton, Calif./Foothill HS/Lady Hustle Fastpitch – Marshall), Lauryn Carter (Los Angeles, Calif./Junipero Serra HS/Firecrackers – TJ) and Thessa Malau'ulu (Long Beach, Calif./St. Anthony HS/Firecrackers – Rico/Weil) have signed their National Letters of Intent.
Armijo, who can pitch, as well as play the infield and outfield, preps at Plano East Senior High School and plays travel ball with Impact Gold – Middlebrook. Last season, she hit .328 with four home runs and 18 runs batted in, while adding 50 strikeouts in 67 2/3 innings in the circle. As a sophomore, she hit .366 with three homers, 30 RBI and 12 doubles, along with a 1.73 earned run average. Armijo was also named the District 6-6A Newcomer of the Year and First Team All-Area as a freshman. She was tied for 49th in the Extra Inning Softball player rankings.
"We are excited to bring a strong talent from Texas to Westwood," Inouye-Perez said. "Carson was a clear standout at a UCLA Elite Camp where she showed great power clearing the fences at Easton Stadium more than once. Carson has the versatility to play both the outfield and first base, and will be ready for some big moments at the plate for our Bruin program."
Beaudin, a right-handed hitting backstop, helped Foothill High School to a CIF North Coast Section Division I title, as FHS became the first NCS team to finish 28-0. She hit .493 with seven home runs and 39 runs batted in. As a sophomore, Beaudin hit .453 with 10 homers and 37 RBI, earning All-Metro Second Team honors. She plays travel ball with Lady Hustle Fastpitch – Marshall.
"Courtney is a physical catcher with a strong arm behind the plate," Inouye-Perez said. "She will add to our catcher/pitcher battery combinations and will be ready to compete and help the team both offensively and as a quarterback for the program."
Carter is coming off a junior season in which she hit .639 with eight home runs and 27 runs batted in after batting .690 as a sophomore with seven homers and 31 RBI. In 2018, she was named CIF Southern Section Division 7 Player of the Year, helping Serra to a Santa Fe League title and a CIF Championship. Carter ranked tied for 81st in the Extra Inning Softball player rankings and plays travel ball with Firecrackers – TJ.
"Lauryn is an impressive all-around athlete who has great speed and range in the outfield," Inouye-Perez said. "We have seen her rob several home runs over the breakaway fences in travel ball with her all-out play. Lauryn is a great add to our roster as she has versatility and athleticism that will impact our lineup in all aspects."
Malau'ulu, the fifth-ranked player in the Extra Inning Softball player rankings, hit .508 last season at St. Anthony High School with nine stolen bases. Malau'ulu not only had a great eye at the plate, with only two strikeouts in 72 plate appearances, but also made just one error on the season. She was named All-Area Second Team. As a sophomore, St. Anthony won the CIF Southern Section Division 6 title. She plays travel ball with Firecrackers – Rico/Weil.
"Thessa is an outstanding athlete who plays a fearless hot corner and will impact the lineup as a true triple threat from the left side," Inouye-Perez said. "We have seen Thessa continue to enjoy big moments in travel ball and has the skill to find a way to get on base with both her power and speed. She comes from a very athletic family background and I look forward to her creating her own legacy here."
