Seniors Celebrated With Sweep of Oregon State

LOS ANGELES - For the second match in a row, senior Savvy Simo completed a Bruin victory with a kill, as she and senior Cali Thompson were honored in their final regular-season home matches in a UCLA sweep of Oregon State on Sunday at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. Set scores were 25-23, 25-13, 25-16.
Simo recorded 14 kills and 14 digs, while junior Mac May led all players with 20 kills to go with six digs. Thompson produced 22 assists and eight digs and sophomore Devon Chang had 16 assists and seven digs, as the Bruins (16-11, 11-7 Pac-12) hit a season-best .363 for the match. Sophomore Kelli Barry had 10 digs, redshirt sophomore Emily Ryan posted six kills and three blocks and junior Jenny Mosser added six kills.ย
The Bruins only trailed by one on a couple of occasions at 1-0 and 20-19, however, their largest lead was just four in the opening set. Up 5-4, three in a row on kills by Simo and May and an Oregon State attack error made it 8-4. The first set would be tied 11 times. Down by one at 20-19, kills from Mosser and Simo gave the Bruins a one-point edge. The score would be tied again at 21 and 23, but back-to-back Simo kills closed out a 25-23 win. Simo posted eight kills and no errors in 11 attempts in the first set, May added four kills and three digs and Barry and Chang each recorded three digs. The Bruins out-hit the Beavers, .361 to .206.

The Bruins led wire-to-wire in set two, scoring seven of the first nine on a pair of blocks by Ryan, one with Mosser and another with Simo, aces from Thompson and Barry, two Mosser kills and an OSU attack error. The Beavers closed to within two at 8-6, but the Bruins responded with 10 of the next 11. May produced five of the points on kills, Ryan added another on a kill and Oregon State committed four errors. The lead reached as many as 14 at 23-9, with the Bruins winning by a score of 25-13 on a kill by redshirt sophomore Sabrina Smith. May notched six kills in the second, Mosser added four and Simo produced six digs. The Bruins out-hit the Beavers, .440 to .036.
There were only two ties in the third set at 3- and 4-all, as the Bruins never trailed. Four in a row on a Beaver service error, two May kills and a block by Hadrych and Smith put UCLA ahead by four, a lead which would stay at least three for the rest of the set. The Bruins' largest lead of the set was nine. On match point number two, Simo'sย fourth kill of the third finished up a 25-16 win. May recorded 10 kills in the final set, while Ryan added three. Simoย posted seven digs, Barry had six and Thompson added five. The Bruins out-hit the Beavers, .317 to .136.
The Bruins take on Arizona in Tucson on Wednesday at 1 p.m. PT/2 p.m. MT. The match will air on Pac-12 Network.
