TUCSON, Ariz. -ย Junior Mac May led the 23rd-ranked Bruins with 21 kills to go with a .439 hitting percentage and eight digs, while senior Savvy Simo produced 14 digs and 10 kills, as UCLA swept Arizona on Wednesday at the McKale Center. Set scores were 25-20, 27-25, 25-22.
ย
Sophomore Devon Chang had 22 assists and six digs, while senior Cali Thompson posted 20 assists and five digs, as the Bruins (17-11, 12-7 Pac-12) were set to a .282 hitting percentage. Redshirt sophomore Emily Ryan added five kills and four blocks, redshirt freshman Lexi Hadrych had five kills and three blocks and redshirt sophomore Sabrina Smith notched four kills and three digs. Sophomore Kelli Barry tallied eight digs, freshman Mari Hinkle added four and junior Jenny Mosser had three.
ย
The Bruins only trailed twice at 3-2 and 11-10 in the opening set. Down by one, a 5-0 UCLA run on two May kills, a Ryan kill and two Arizona (15-16, 5-14 Pac-12) errors put the Bruins up for good at 15-11. At 22-20, a Hadrych kill, a Simo ace and a May kill closed out a five-point victory. May recorded six kills in the opener, Simo had nine digs and three kills, Ryan and Smith both posted three kills and Hinkle added three digs. The Bruins out-hit the Wildcats, .326 to .237.
ย
Set two featured 15 ties and four lead changes, with neither team leading by more than three. Down 19-16, two May kills and a triple block from Hadrych, Ryan and May evened the score at 19. The Bruins were still behind by two at 23-21, but back-to-back Simo kills made it 23-all. The Wildcats got the next one to earn a set point, but a ball handling error and another Simo kill gave the Bruins a set point. Arizona sided out, but kills from Simo and May wrapped up a 27-25 win. May had eight kills and five digs in the second, Simo added six kills, Thompson had four digs and Barry and Chang both posted three digs. The Bruins were out-hit, .244 to .217.
ย
The third set again came down to the wire, with six ties and two lead changes. Trailing by two at 10-8, a 6-1 Bruin run put the visitors ahead by three. The first two points came on a Hadrych kill and block with Ryan. Following an Arizona sideout, two blocks (May/Ryan/Mosser and Ryan/Mosser) and two Wildcat errors brought the lead to 14-11. UCLA didn't trail for the rest of the match, getting the lead to as many as four at 21-17, as the Bruins won the third by a score of 25-22. May had seven kills, Hadrych added three and Barry and Simo each posted three digs. The Bruins out-hit the Wildcats, .321 to .243.
